Is this a 1928-P Peace or potentially altered 1928-S?

pcgs69pcgs69 Posts: 4,396 ✭✭✭✭

At first I thought it was just a cleaned 1928-P but then there’s a stain where the mint mark would go and some odd marks in there. Is this truly a 1928-P or maybe an altered S?

Although conceivably a small grease strike through, I would never buy it.

The partial missing ray is also a 'tell' of an altered coin.

Mint mark probably removed and then harshly cleaned to try to hide the surface disturbance,

Spot removed for sure but it struck like a P mint. Why bother

All 1928-P die pairs are shown on VAMWorld. I don't like the coin regardless, though.

Even if this were TPG-authenticated as a P, they've been known to make mistakes and it will always be a problem coin.

Did anyone mention it’s pretty badly hacked up?

This is a coin that I already own so not sure how to proceed because I don't want to sell is as a 28-P. But based on what everyone is saying, it's pretty safe to assume it's a 28-S that has been altered. Should I just scratch the hell out of it so there's no chance anyone will confuse it for a P in the future? Certainly hate defacing it, but don't want anyone to get scammed.

I don't know for sure, but I think you're right to be suspicious.
