Question about a Ebay return

alaura22alaura22 Posts: 3,803 ✭✭✭✭✭

I didn't want to start a new thread but didn't want to hijack someone else
I'm in the process of retuning a coin from a well known seller on Ebay. I have bought hundreds of coins from them over the years. This time I got a coin with a huge spot on the obverse
I sent a request to return the coin through the Ebay process.
I started the return on April 3rd, Ebay said the if I didn't hear back from the seller by April 9th that they would get involved.
Today I get a email though ebay from the seller requesting my email address so they can send me a return label, is that the way this is supposed to work? I thought that a return was all handled through Ebay.
Advice anyone

No, you get the return label through eBay.

    Good to hear
I thought that ebay wouldn't let you sent your email address though their playform but it seems that they did

No need for the seller to have your email address; you download the return label directly from eBay.

    Now I'm concerned
They didn't go through ebay they sent me a request for my email address using ebay email

i'll defer to IkesT but at least they contacted you about sending you a return label through the ebay system. ebay would have record of that in the event of a dispute

Shouldn't ebay have blocked me from sending my email address?

Yes, only bc they didn't use the ebay return process

I've returned eBay items several times and have always received a return label through eBay. That's how eBay tracks the item so that they know it has been returned.

I should also note that this company has changed over the last few months. They were always very good and responded to emails right away. Now is way different, a lot of complaints

    Sounds like a red flag.

If you make arrangements with the seller through email to return an item, eBay will not have a record of it and can't help you if the seller doesn't give you your refund.

Sounds like maybe a good reason to not buy from them, anymore. Isn't that what feedback is supposed to help with?

I will give ebay a call to see what they have to say

did they use an ebay shipping label to send it to you?

anyway. i can see this thread growing longer than needed.

to slow it down just name the seller. perhaps people here can rep for them

With all due respect I started this thread to get opinions and for advice
    Thanks for your input

i'm asking for the name not to out them but to calm things down.

they may not have even used an ebay shipping label to m send it to you.

if it is a well known seller with a good reputation here, then knowing that might settle you better than a long thread of "what if" scenarios

It should be done through eBay, barring undisclosed circumstances.

I don't buy that much on ebay and return very little, but i did have to return a coin a month or two ago. The coin was nice enough, but the images didn't show what we might term "carbon spotting" on the surfaces and this could simply have been because they were most easily seen on an angle and the images were direct. I contacted the seller and he had me go through ebay and they generated a mailing label for me to us. I told the seller I would pay for return shipping, but he wanted me to use the ebay generated mailing label and in his listing he said that the return postage would be deducted from any refund. He also asked for images of the carbon spots so I took several and included them in a message. He received the coin in a few days and refunded me in full without taking anything out for using the ebay mailing label.

So, in my experience, I received the label through ebay directly.

Not all sellers keep up with the processes that eBay implements. It sounds like a good faith effort on their behalf to fulfill your request of a return.

If they are a large seller and you’ve done lots of business with them previously, then just message them with a request that the return is approved through the eBay system. They may be unaware that eBay will generate the return label or they may simply prefer their own return process.

At this point, I don’t think there is reason for serious concern and don’t think you should forego future business based on the seller’s actions up to this point.

I wouldn't worry for a large seller who might have their own shipping account that they prefer to the eBay process.

But will I be covered by ebay if I use there shipping label?
How will ebay know what's going on with the return if it isn't through ebay.

    I'd call ebay

In the last past, I have returned 2 counterfeit coins. Both returns were accepted by ebay with the same statement, if not finalized by seller in x-days ebay will step in. Never received anything from seller and received a refund but no shipping label. I guess they didn't want to pay to return a worthless item. Ebay must have known this or they would have provided a label as usual.

Not necessarily. It depends on the seller's return settings. If they don't have it set to automatically accept returns, eBay won't automatically issue a label.

eBay will not be involved in the return. But, again, for a large seller using their own shipping account, I wouldn't care. They are reputable. If I return something to Walmart, it's just between myself and Walmart. I don't need/expect a 3rd party guarantee. And if the seller doesn't follow through, you can still file a charge back.

I certainly prefer the extra layer of eBay protection. But that's usually for amateur or anonymous sellers.

For a return, if the seller accepts the return, Ebay allows the seller to either

    1) Have ebay provice the label
    2) Send their own label.

Your good friend Google in 5 seconds

ebay can a seller provide their own return label?

Yes, eBay sellers can provide their own return labels instead of using eBay’s generated labels. Sellers often do this to use cheaper carriers, handle international returns, or add insurance.

This has happened to me before, and it’s no issue at all. Technically you never have to actually use an ebay return label, you can ship the item back using your own or the shippers method. So if the seller wants to mail you a private label, all you need to do is manually enter their tracking number into the item’s return page.

It’s smart for sellers to do it this way so that they aren’t impacted by item not as described returns. I believe certain returns hurt sellers top ratings which will hurt their selling fee discounts given by eBay.

The return label provided by this seller is a USPS GROUND ADVANTAGE LABLE and not an Ebay label.
I know this because as stated above, this seller has had a lot of issues in say the last 6 months.
I have 2 different return packages ready to send back coins to them that were sent and were not the items won.
The first item was supposed to be a pr69 dcam coin but was sent a pr69 cam.
I notified them about the error and they thanked me and said that they would send me the correct item which they would include in my next order shippments.
When the new purchases arrived, the coin that was to replace the error coin was actually an identical pr69 cam coin.
So now I have 2 identical wrong graded coins in my possession.
The seller sent me a return label for their first mistake and I packaged up the first wrong coin but waited until I received the next order that I won from them.
I contacted them about sending again the wrong coin and again they sent an additional return label to my email axccount.
They contacted me again and asked me to ship back the wrong coins and when they received them they would "figure"something out."
I replied that I would not ship any coins back until I received the correct coin.
Both return packages are sitting in my safe for about a month now.
I still buy from them with no issues but now own 2 wrong coins (about a $20.00 value) and am out the one I needed ( a $10.00 value).
Mike, I would call ebay and have them issue the return label. When the seller recieves the package and eBay is notified of package delivered, eBay will issue a refund.

We had an issue where we sent the wrong coin to an eBay buyer. We were able to send a return label to them via the eBay messaging system as an attachment.
