BidAsk has passed

I just heard that BidAsk passed away last weekend. Dan was one of the most enthusiastic collector/dealers in the game. He started buying and selling as a kid, like so many of us have done, and then moved on to a successful career as a financial advisor. But he would still follow and participate in the auctions, and occasionally set up at a coin show with a great selection of mostly world coins. I don’t think he ever really specialized in anything until the past 5-10 years, when he became a very serious collector of Mexican Cap and Rays 8 Reales. I still remember encouraging him to stick with the project, yet doubting that he could stay focused on it. But he did stick with it, and his collection was very much on track for greatness. Sad to see him go, but he sure had fun playing coins with us!

Dan was a collector of there ever was one. He was also generous in selling his coins with some of my best coins coming from Dan.

I hope to add a Cap & Rays from the Bidask collection one day to always remember him by.

    RIP

Unfortunately I got that call today too and am deeply saddened. Dan was one of the most generous people that I have ever met in my life. I sold my collection of cap and rays to him about 5 years ago because he truly enjoyed them more than I did. He last emailed me on March 5th and told me his cancer and returned and keep praying for him.

Many of his coins are for sale at Heritage where bidding opens in March and May.

Truly going to miss him as I know many of you will too.

    Very sad…

I think I met him at the NY International probably 12-15 years ago. My sincere condolences to his family and those that knew him well. He will be missed…

Edited to add- after checking some older threads/posts, it would have been in 2007- 19 years ago

Wow, what a loss. I will miss Dan. I remember showing him a coin I bought from him 16 years ago and he was like "oh, i remember that one - you got it from me at the CICF in 2008". I will miss our conversations about coins and markets. And I hope his kids continue the legacy as his Cap and Rays collection deserves to be finished (or as close to finished as possible, given the gargantuan nature of that task).

    RIP Dan.

God, sorry to hear this. Always positive on here, never a sour word... and what a C&R collection (plus others). Was surprised when he was backing off the project, obvious why now. Geez.

I'm heartbroken to hear this news. I met Dan, and his son, at the New York international coin show a few years back. I purchased several coins from him at that time which I consider very important to my collection. I'm glad to have that small connection to him. I very much enjoyed his presence here. My deepest sympathies to his family. So sad and so sorry.

Saw the first batch of Cap & Rays were auctioned by HA on April 12th. The group brought strong prices as they were nice coins. The auction was the reason I came to the board to see if anyone here won anything. I had a couple of soft bids that made it to the live auction only to run into strong live bidding that made me realize I need to be more serious if I want to win anything in the next round. The next group is scheduled for June 21st. Happy hunting

If someone bought a coin and really wanted to know if it was Dan’s, just for provenance or sentimental reasons, we could probably find out.

Extremely sorry to have heard this recently. Dan was a wonderful collector, phenomenal numismatist, and an enjoyable person to spend some time with. Truly enjoyed every interaction I had with him over the years, and several breakfasts at Ess-A-Bagel in NY at the NYINC show. Deepest condolences to his family, hopefully his son stays involved in the numismatic world.

I wish HA had provided provenance information on Dan's coins. I could guess what may have been his, but could not be certain. I bet his really expensive coins are going into the ANA sale, probably again without provenance.

You can compare some of them to his registry now and then he didn't really grade down if they didn't cross so the NGC ones I'm not all sure about. I'm familiar with a lot more of his 8 reales that haven't hit the market but I'm not sure the family is in a hurry to unload them right now.
