I like the Anthony dollar. It has significance,It is the last of the late-Twentieth Century aesthetic. Gasparro’s designs are so familiar, so clean. It hints at the tsunami of personages to appear on later issues.
I get a few dozen a year from the bank; I’ve found the rim variation and proofs.
I liked it unconsciously because it has the profile of my Granny (who lived an hour up the road from Rob’s grandfather).—

Good morning. Today is Sunday April 5th. Happy Easter! For today, we post a Modern Commemorative (1983 - Present).
I love Commemorative coins, since they typically have very interesting stories behind them. While I collect the “Classic Silver” commems, the following is my only Modern commem, but I love its story.
The 2008-S Proof Half Dollar Bald Eagle Commemorative coins were issued to celebrate the Bald Eagles removal from the endangered species list, after remaining in the endangered species list for 35 years. This was also the first commemorative half dollar produced by the U.S. Mint since 2003.
The reverse of the coin displays a close up of Challenger the Bald Eagle. Challenger is a living representation of the Bald Eagle's successful Endangered Species Act of 1973. Challenger fell from his nest shortly after birth in 1989 in Louisiana, and after having contact with humans, he was no longer able to survive in the wilderness. Challenger has flown at major historic and sporting events, such as the World Series, major NFL games, and the Olympic Games.
Challenger the bald eagle is still alive as of early 2026. At over 36 years old, he is enjoying retirement at the American Eagle Foundation (AEF) headquarters in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. While he retired from flying in massive stadiums in 2019 due to age and eyesight issues, he underwent successful cataract surgery in 2024 and still makes occasional appearances.
As a prominent ambassador, he was the first bald eagle to free-fly in major sports stadiums.

I’ve been in baseball my whole life. Played through college, then played in Europe for a few years, then came home and started coaching, now have been a HS coach for 20 years.
When I decided to do a 7070 registry this felt like the only option. I remember the uproar from when the mint first released these. I think they may have been the first curved coin the US mint has done.
Having one of these in my set just felt like the right thing to do, as baseball has been front and center for basically all of my life.

Here is the one from my early-2000s Registry type set. Prior to that one, I had a 1981-S in PCGS PR70 DCAM (OGH).
