A New Coin for the Seated Half Collection - A Rare Variety

CatbertCatbert Posts: 8,149 ✭✭✭✭✭

The 1842-O Small Date, Reverse of 1839 is a tough coin to find in a nice condition. I'm not usually variety obsessed (like my friend @pursuitofliberty and his busty clan), however, this is a desirable rare coin to own. PCGS CoinFacts states this rates a R8 survival designation and, as for CAC, there are 15 certified with the highest being MS62.

Anyway, when I first saw it, I just liked the nice even wear and decided it was the right quality for my collection.

:D Dan! I think you have an obsession. Of some sort. Maybe it's a fetish. For prissy pretty girls posing on rocks?! :p

But you know me ... I like big busts and I can not lie ...

    :D

Great look. Really wholesome. She's a winner (even for a pretty poser)!!

It can't top the "Briggs' brown bomber." The BBB has brown toning and VF20 wear but I figured the dies are so messed up that that is why it was unfairly graded at VG10 by ICG. I thought it would cross and upgrade easily to PCGS as a Fine. It came back as a VG8, presumably because of rough surfaces and a past cleaning, with a Trueview that shows none of its (apparently secondary) toning. Not my best purchase. The TPGs hate my coin. :(;):D

IMO, the 1842-O small date should be a required coin for the set. Same with the 1842 small date, reverse of '42 and reverse of 39 (!), the 1846 and 1846-O Tall Dates, and the various 1873 arrows and no arrows coins. The 1853-O no arrows is required for a complete set, why not these others?

Super tough coin. It seems to me that for some reason the 1842 New Orleans coins tend to come very crusty. What an impressive coin to add to your set. James
