My Best Ever Results from a PCGS Submission

I know it seems odd to spend so much time and energy trying to achieve plus grades but, I enjoy it immensely. What is even better is making them yourself, you know getting recognition from the big guys saying, wow you have nice coins! Anyways, I just had a submission come back were I received 12/17 upgrades, batting about 70%, my previous record being around 50 and change % if I remember correctly. I will also post my failures for reference for everyone to see.

-

I will start of with a coin that I usually wouldn't buy because I collect bust half dollars, but I saw it years ago and knew it was a real one of a kind.

-

1920 AU55+FH

Next a coin I am super proud to own because it involves my other niche passion, Gold CACs

1814 AU55+ o-103 GOLD CAC, one of my favorite die marriages nicknamed "Wing Bar"

Next up, a very rare and interesting die marriage.

1817 AU55+ CAC O-106a Single Leaf

Now I will just show off the rest and add some comments here and there,

1823 AU53+ CAC O-108

The first failure,

1823 AU55 CAC O-104

1824 AU53+ CAC O-106

Another GOLD CAC ! ,

1824 AU50+ GOLD CAC O-107

1824 AU55+ CAC O-112

1824 AU55 O-115

1826 AU55+ CAC O-106a

1827 AU55 CAC O-123

1827 AU55+ CAC O-115

1830 AU55+ CAC O-122

A very flashy PL R4+ die marriage, nice !
1830 AU55+ CAC O-109

1830 AU55+ CAC O-107

1832 AU55 CAC O-113

and last but not least, my worst failure of the submission(thankfully there were not very many)

1810 LG Date, LG 5 $5 AU53 CAC

_Since I didn't make a post about my previous plus only reconsideration submission I will post the successes here as well !
_

1808 AU50+ O-103

1812 AU55+ CAC O-107

1817 AU50+ CAC O-110

1818 AU55+ CAC O-111

1825 AU55+ CAC O-102

1830 AU55+ GOLD CAC O-102

1830 AU55+ CAC O-123

1837 AU50+ CAC

**Please note that none of these coins are for sale! Thank you for viewing! **

-

I now own 41 plus grade bust halves ranging from AU50+ - AU55+ (I don't keep the AU58+s)

How does one plus upgrade a gold CAC?

    Congratulations!

It does or would not, as CAC does not take the + grade into account when reviewing coins in theory the op should be able to resubmit the new + holder for a resticker of the gold bean. In theory anyway.

Yes, but why would PCGS not automatically upgrade by at least a point?

They apparently do not agree that the coin is at least one point undergraded, at least not at this time. >:) That may actually be better from a financial standpoint anyway, many collectors covet that gold bean.

When you submit those for upgrade do you do it by reconsideration and specify only a + grade? I'd imagine you would have to, otherwise you risk losing the CAC status of the coin, which might be worth more in the case of a gold CAC than the + would be worth on the coin.

They would not because it is a plus only submission not a reconsideration, so upgrading by a point is not an option.

Precisely. I do not want them to upgrade, I only collect up to AU55. I also do not want to lose my CAC/Gold CAC status.

Taking a Green sticker 50 or 53 (especially), submitting for a plus when it already has a CAC sticker, which then requires another round trip to CAC as well, doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Nor does playing plus games with Gold CAC's.

It seems like just more "imbedded plastic money" to me, and not without some risk ... but ... the beauty of collecting is we all get to chase our own pursuits.

And some of those do appear to be quite lovely coins!

Glad you got the kind of results you were looking for. No matter what, amassing 41 plus coins is rather impressive no matter how you slice it.

Congrats on the pluses! Those are some very attractive coins you have there.

I keep looking at the 1830 O-123 half with the blue rim toning.

Curious, but why do you "only collect up to AU55"? What's wrong with an AU58?

Just personal preference. I am a sucker for a mid grade AU.

As long as it's gold stickered and is actually a 58+ ;)

That's smart to avoid all the Everyman auction "fist fights" by selecting AU55 coins.

It is not all about that, I just love the look of a perfect mid grade AU. Weird personal preference of mine.

Trust me I am one to pay up for my 55s

I recently went 0 for 4 on 58+ attempts, should have had the OP submit them for me.
