Stunning coins in this thread!

I have several very nice early copper coins from the collection of Robert “Bobby” Martin, but this VT RR-25 is the only pic at the moment. This coin is IMO incredibly charming, despite the natural flaws.
I also had a beautiful CT Scholar Head out of the Martin sale, but I sold it in a fit of temporary insanity.

I have a lot of respect for the Martin pedigree, along with Partrick.

Another for me ... Ex Garrett/ David Cassel

J644 - 1868 10 Cent Postage Currency trial/pattern.
Ex: John Work Garrett Collection (Stack's, 3/1976)/lot 602; Believed to be previously from a Sampson sale of the Mid 1870’s

This piece holds particular importance due to its provenance as part of the renowned David Cassel collection. David did an extensive study of the US pattern postage currency coins. This piece is displayed as his coin #18 on his Plate #14 – Category II. Dies 1-B, Cracks in his 2000 book.

In the Steve Ivy Oct 1983 ( The Clarmont Sale) Lot #4586, The catalog reads
_J-644 1868 PROOF (63) Piece de Caprice Mule in Nickel. R.E. 30.86 grams. (R-7; 8 to 10 known.) Long believed to represent a Pattern issue, we believe that this was one of the surreptitious issues struck by Linderman and Snowden in the late 1860’s as a concocted rarity for collectors. This piece is fully brilliant but shows striking weakness at 2:00 on the obverse as well as a planchet flaw below N in ONE on the reverse. Nonetheless, it is above average for the issue. Ex AUCTION 82: 1814, Garrett (Stack’s, 1976): 602. Original provenance unknown but felt to be from a Sampson Sale of the early 1870’s, _

The Bechtler speaks for itself - the Morgan I had done for fun as a gift to my Dad - coin was from a small collection he bought from his Uncle many years ago. I got it back when he passed away at age 97.

This large cent has a provenance back to the John McCoy Sale held in May 1864. Other owners were: Joseph Zanoni, Thomas Cleneay, Peter Mougey, Thomas L. Elder, Howard R. Newcomb, J.C. Morgenthau, Floyd T. Starr, Roy E. Naftzger, Jr., Eric Streiner, Twin Leaf Collection Sale by Stack's, July 2015. A very impressive list of heavy hitters in the copper world. PCGS Proof 64 Brown with 5 known.

@GuzziSport: I didn’t ask, but my guess would be he thought it should be BN, not RB. There’s nothing wrong with the coin, but I think a case could be made for the BN designation.

While not in high grade nor extremely rare, its from the Norweb cabinet. Bought it quite some time ago. Just love the originality. The 1828 Large date is a very scarce variety to find that has not been cleaned or messed with. Norweb settled with an AU so I just love it and have it as a keeper.

This NEWP is just that. One, it’s a CBH - a series I have a lot to learn about (& am enjoying doing so)! This example is a R-2.
Two, then there’s the pedigree. I’ve seen “Link” before & learned about who he is. One, he’s a dedicated CBH collector, including die marriages. Two, he’s an oncologist (Dr. Charles Link) that in the past co-founded a firm that performed research & developed the Ebola virus vaccine.
Amusing side note: the seller of this piece knows Link personally & simply calls him “Chuck”. Provenance indeed!

Thank you very much for the Bio ... I like Pedigreed coins when we actually can appreciate the prior collectors background.

I fell into a trap in this blog thinking everyone might have some knowledge about the prior named collectors when in fact we may not. I focus on patterns so many of the Pedigreeds' I know over lap with other areas of Numismatics (i.e. Garrett, JJ Pitman, Bass etc) but in some cases I have no idea of who collectors were, especially a specialist. Some nice pieces were shared by lordmarcovan above, however, I have no knowledge of most of the collectors such as Wolff-Metternich Collection or the Long Island Collection? Might be an educational moment to put a few Bio lines when we post,

It appears my 1819 CBH PCGS MS64 CAC (Ex. Eliasberg) posted above was in the same submission as yours. I guess great coins travel together! 😉

Major Lenox R. Lohr & Empire Coin Company (Q. David Bowers and James F. Ruddy), circa 1961

While most of the post above have a pedigree on the TPG label I have several without any such notation. However, patterns being as rare as they are, can many times be traced back.
This is one.
1869 Quarter in Copper Judd-736, PR66 RB by NGC Low R.7 ( I traced about 8 examples)

Saul Techiman on USpatterns.com had developed an extensive photo library of pattern pieces and their pedigrees, however this was not one of them. I did trace this piece to the Bowers & Merena June 1991 (George N. Polis sale) lot #1122. Lot 1122 had a reference to Major Lenox R. Lohr.
The Bowers and Stacks catalog lead into the pattern section

“ … We are pleased to offer in the following lots an outstanding selection pedigreed to the celebrated pattern collection of Major Lenox R. Lohr. These pieces were acquired by the consignor from Empire Coin Company (Q. David Bowers and James F. Ruddy), circa 1961, when the Lohr Collection was being dispersed, and the group has been kept off the market since that time. …. The Lohr Collection comprised over 1,400 different patterns and was the largest such holding ever formed. “

Major Lenox Lohe appeared to have had a distinguished career and a life well lived. Note his Obit:

This coin was part of the “Rev. Dr. James G. K. McLure” collection, which in 2016 Heritage described as “a pristine, fresh-to-market grouping of more than 3,000 coins collected between the 1860s and the 1930s.”

There’s a gallery of his collection on the NGC site, which you can browse by denomination. @rhedden posted about it here when it was sold off at Long Beach that year.

I acquired the coin after it lost its provenance label in the cross from NGC to PCGS, but learned of its history when I was researching the coin to determine a counteroffer to the seller’s asking price.
