I Just “Backed Into” #1 Current for the Two PCGS Dansco 7070 Registry Sets
I just received some good news today:
For many years, I had been #3 Current on each of the two PCGS Dansco 7070 Registry Sets (one set with Gold, the other set without Gold). I was never able to compete financially with the two numismatic giants ahead of me - “Black Cat” at #2, and D.L. Hansen at #1.
Last year Black Cat retired his two #2 sets, so I moved up to #2 Current. Just yesterday, D.L. Hansen retired his two #1 sets, so I now “backed into” #1 Current on each of the two PCGS Dansco 7070 Registry Sets.
Here are Hotlinks to each of those two sets:

Nothing is as expensive as free money.
The 1868 $1, 1814 1c and 1896 10c really stand out for me! Well done!
First and most importantly, thanks to all of your for your kind comments.
A LOT! I started out in the early 1960's moving from my Blue Whitman Roosevelt Dime folder to collecting Type Coins. Why Type? My dad owned a coffee shop in lower Manhattan, and one day he brought home for me a 20 Cent Piece (this was before 1965 when Clad coins came about). Apparently a customer thought it was a quarter. I was fascinated by this odd denomination. I then bought a handsome Black Capital plastic holder, roughly 10x14 or so - 3 layers, the two outer ones clear plastic, the inside one with the holes and lettering, black). I worked on upgrading those coins over the next 20 years or so. Once TPG's came about in the mid-1980's, I started buying only slabbed coins, and at that point "expanded" the number of Type coins. As time went on, and the amount of my discretionary money increased, so did the upgrades. Around 2015 or so, I started with the PCGS Registry, and set up several different Registry Type Sets, including the Dansco 7070 with gold and without gold once I saw them. for the next four or five years or so, I continued upgrading but then stopped, as I was "finished"
Once I "completed" these Type Sets, I asked myself that very same question. I then started putting together two or three sets at a time. As such, I'm very proud of how BROAD my collection has become. Not only do I have these attractive Type Sets, but I've also put together the following high grade sets:

Nice!
Sweet ... what a nice balance collection with eye appeal.
I guess all the recent visibility in the postings about Hansen's double booking his collection has paid off. Happy to see you benefited from it.

Beautiful set - congrats! As they say, "those who stay will be champions!"
Or, if you live in a cave, "those who stay will be champignons!"
Congratulations! You might write that you "backed into" them, but just like in the sports world, it doesn't matter how you qualify for the post-season, you just have to qualify.

LOL - Sometimes it's the only way. The 1868 sets are still there so I sit @#2 - Again.
Congrats! I see that trade dollar proofs are still unretired. Sigh
Congratulations @winesteven! I’ve always admired the beautiful coins you’ve shared with us through the years.
Congratulations. It has to happen and glad you received the benny.

Those are gorgeous sets. Congratulations on being number one and having put in the work to get there.
Congrats!! This is an awesome achievement. I just got my Dansco 7070 with the gold page in the mail. Starting at 31 and this is truly something amazing. Question, did you crack the slabs and actually put them in the album? I want to go with at least AU50 for the 19th Century coins then at least MS63 for 20th Century and moderns but am worried about cracking the slabs. Thoughts?
Congratulations! They're amazing sets and it's certainly really cool that you were able to accomplish this. Certainly would take a crap ton of work to accomplish this, something that I would definitely struggle heavily on, and overall it's definitely a great accomplishment! I recently started my own PCGS registry type set, it really isn't that good, only around high single-digit amount of coins, all really not all that valuable or flashy in terms of quality in comparison to yours, but I'm certainly trying.

Late to the party but wow! Congrats Steve. Very well deserved given the work you've put in. Enjoy it all -- that is, until yours too eventually hit the auction block.
Congratulations! Very impressive sets.
Thanks to all of you above for your good wishes. I’m truly appreciative!
While many decades ago I put raw coins in a handsome Capital plastic Type Set display, I never bought the actual Dansco 7070 physical album. I use the PCGS digital Dansco 7070, and “list” my slabbed coins for each Registry slot.
I suggest you determine your financial comfort level for each slot, and buy the grade for a particular slot that fits your budget, regardless of how low or high the grade is, and how different that grade is from the grades of the coins in the other slots. As such, my suggestion is not to focus on matching grades, but do only what is financially comfortable. Only buy coins that are “problem-free”, and have nice eye appeal to YOU for that grade!t
We should each enjoy and take pleasure from the coins we buy for our collections, regardless of the grades!
Steve
