Anyone else having issues with USPS delivery right now?

ChrisH821ChrisH821 Posts: 7,021 ✭✭✭✭✭

While not strictly coin related, many of us ship or have coins shipped via USPS. I know there was a big winter storm in the central US, but it seems like USPS is selectively holding shipments or something. I've had something coming to me stuck in St Louis for weeks(before this storm) while another shipment went right through, and I have an outbound registered package that seems like it's just sitting in Chicago now for 6 days. That one should have gotten on a plane to HI from there, and should not have been impacted by the central US storms.
Do any of you also have packages just stuck?

Slow here in Dallas, registered in particular. Attribute to weather. We shut down it seems.

Since January 22nd, most of my USPS packages have been running 2 days past the expected date set by USPS.

Probably my neighbor. He lives behind and forty above my property and I haven't seen any tracks on his long gravel driveway. ;) ... foot of snow for weeks.

the weather shut us down here in the north east. for the amount of snow (15.6 in.) safety comes first ( it was bills anyhow) im not gonna worry bout it

I had a package delayed for three business days. I assumed it was due to the severe winter weather. No big deal. I eventually received it just fine.

My “Two Day Express” FEDEX that just arrived today took a week to get to me…(sent last Saturday) and my last USPS “Express” coin sent from NJ took a MONTH to get. It was mailed by the sender from NYC and sat in NJ for over three weeks! Tracking numbers seem to be good for nothing but getting me aggravated since the USPS seems to have no clue where the items are anyway.

I have had no issues at all. A lot of packages and moving quickly. GC sent one out Monday afternoon and it was delivered by Wednesday afternoon. I have only had a couple GC packages take until Thursday.

Yeah, some stuff delayed from the East Coast... impacted by the weather, I am sure.

All sorts of stuff late, not just USPS. Never had a super late delivery of the type alluded to above. Have had packages seemingly languish for several days in specific post offices. Overall I’m a USPS fan.

I have a package in St. Louis right now without updates for 2 days. It started in St Louis made it to Indianapolis and back to St Louis were it sits. 🤷

I had a package to pick up from FedEx, someone got there 90 minutes before me, had the tracking info and an iD with my name on it - filed police report.

2nd FedEx package this week, signature required, just left in my entry w/o knocking or ringing doorbell - fortunately safe.

Last Sat., priority mail, tracking said someone had picked it up already - fortunately clerical error in the back room.

I shipped out an express last week on Friday, NY area to FL it finally arrived yesterday. No guarantee on these now, regular priority would have been faster. A seasoned carrier said that usps is phasing out express because they don't have the planes for it. I liked usps express corporate which they got rid of. Apparently "Ground Advantage" is their mainstay now.

Certainly not weather related. I had a coin ordered on 11/19. Shipped on 11/22 with expected delivery on 11/28. Actually received in on 12/23. I track pkgs. going from 85 miles away to 28 miles away, then back to 85miles. I coulda walk it home by the time I received it.

    Hi,
(yes I havent posted in a long while)
I was going to post a new thread, and I did search for this, which is how I landed in this thread.

I just sent an order in using registered mail. I've used this many times since I started getting PCGS grading service some years ago. I've never had this happen before.
So I got a delivery status saying nobody authorized was available at PCGS to sign for the package.
I did use the new address - Polly C. Gilmore ... etc.
Do I need to initiate a re-delivery, or just wait for USPS to make another attempt, or a PCGS rep pick up the package?
I know sometimes USPS indicates the extreme, but they do what they can to try re-delivery.

Anyone ever run into this before?

    Thx

Compare USPS to FedEx for security of gold coins. I sent several Gold 1 ouncers Registered mail to CA. While the shipments were slow they were properly handled. FedEx signed my name on $10k in gold and left it on my porch! All while I was in Arizona. Fortunately my dear wife brought them inside.

Just to follow up, in case anyone is keeping track ...
I got in touch with PCGS customer service, and this happens on occasion - its a post office data entry error, wrong code or something. Just wait a few days and it clears up in the tracking. The rep was very helpful in the matter, explaining to me what was going on. They see it from time to time, my 1st time encountering it. Taking note for future reference.

Yesterday, USPS left 24 coins back from CAC worth $8K by my back door without getting signature confirmation. A year ago, they left $14K worth of coins sitting on my porch for 14 hours. They hardly ever get my signature; they simply sign some fake, weird name that shares a few letters with my own name. I complain often to the Post Office manager, but it makes no difference.

I feel like a broken record, but people who receive valuable shipments via USPS should seriously consider getting a post office box, preferably at a smaller post office where you can get to know the window clerks.

You don't have to tell them your business, but you can let them know that your mail is very important to you and if you've made a good impression on them they will probably take extra care of your mail.

I get a lot of oversized mail that I don't want bent, and they hold it in the back until I come to the window. Bad weather or being away on vacation are not concerns

I'm nice to them instead of being pissy like a lot of customers, I buy the sheets of stamps that they can't get rid of, etc. etc.

I get exceptional service from the USPS. :)

I agree with this. Having a PO box is a must if you ship or receive expensive items regularly, even if for no reason besides privacy.

Not to bring this one back up, but have a different package also getting stuck in Indianapolis before heading almost 1500 miles in the wrong direction. All my packages have arrived without issue, but all my recent packages that go through Indianapolis, go to a mystery location and delays my packages almost a week. 🤷

Problems with pkgs. being shipped across the country, only to get 40 miles away, then off they go. Had a coin from Calif. arrive in Zanesville, Ohio ( 40 mi. away ) back to Columbus, then Chicago, back to Columbus, then Z-ville, back to Columbus. Tracking currently says In Transit to next facility, wherever that may be.

I had a PO Box once. Then I moved to north Florida. Ten years later, I ordered a $300 coin and watched it get delivered to the old PO Box in south Florida. I checked my eBay addresses, and the old PO box was not one of them. It had been deleted from my eBay information. All I could figure is that the seller must have had my personal info on their computer from a purchase many years ago and it popped up on their screen after entering my name. Some Florida City guy received a nice gift in the mail. I was reimbursed by eBay.

I live in north Florida as well - perhaps we are neighbors!

But to the OP, DEFINITELY yes, the USPS has been very unreliable lately. Case in point - I mailed a PRIORITY package from north Florida to Atlanta - a distance I can drive in 4 hours - and it took TWENTY-SIX DAYS to arrive. We later determined it spent three weeks bouncing around in Jacksonville.

Further, a different customer had sent me a paper check for $4000 (um yes, I still accept those and some people still send them) that seemingly never arrived. So I myself paid for stop-payment and 11 days later, he sent a replacement. When it arrived two days later, I cashed it .... only to discover that my bank immediately rejected it saying it wasn't paid. Next day, a SECOND check arrived! Turns out that the first took so long to arrive that I inadvertently assumed it was the replacement check. In fact, the two checks, mailed eleven days apart, arrived one day apart.

Just seems like inconsistency is the name of the game today.
