Likely XF condition but how much does the damage affect the value of the coin? Is there a premium over melt?

According to PCGS, the 1843-D small D is around $4000 in EF but with the damage i think that nets the value down to that of a Fine-12 or 15, so around $2650-2800.
Overall, around 4X melt, with it currently standing at $633.39.

At that $ value level get it graded by our hosts and you can price it from there. If a problem coin perhaps a problem coin dealer can advise you.

A coin like that might be worth getting repaired. I imagine that someone who knew what they were doing could improve the reverse rims without harming the design elements. It would still be a problem coin, but hopefully less cringeworthy.

I think that it was mounted for jewelry at one time. As for sending it in for repairs, I think that would be a waste of money. Whatever the technician could do would probably not increase the value enough to cover his fee.
The 1843-D is actually one of the more common Dahlonega Mint quarter eagle dates.
It was one of my first Dahlonega coins in decent condition.
