Here's something I've never come across, one seller Oklahoma, the other Florida selling same coin.

The photos are slightly different, the reverse anyway.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

It occurs rather frequently, sometimes with the OK from the owner of the coins, but other times, not.

Did you read the description on the APMEX coin? I suspect they did own it in the past and it became part of their photo inventory.

Add this Jefferson Nickel graded MS-66 by PCGS to your cart today!
This is not a photo of the actual item. The photos are meant to be an indication of the product you will receive.

Interesting the PCGS price guide value is $65.

Looking at obverse slab pics, it does look like a stolen pic with black background added around gasket.

Does eBay still supply 'representative' pics for sellers?

APMEX once listed an image for a Capped Bust half dime that I owned, which kinda surprised me, since it wasn't for sale at that time. Then I saw the fine print, similar to that on the listing linked above, that said:
"Photos in this listing may or may not be stock photos.
The photos are meant to be an indication of the product you will receive."

I have seen this before. I purchased a coin from one dealer and it arrived with another dealer's inventory sticker on the reverse...who was selling it for less! Oh well.

That's why I don't buy coins from APMEX.

Yeah, I get your point. But I guess I'd give them a try (if they ever had a set piece I needed). I'd read the fine print closely - looking for "this is the exact coin being offered here."

Once when I was plugging holes in Danscos for proof coins, I bought a number of proof sets from APMEX and they were fine to deal with. But I do prefer dealing with people I know who are looking out for my goals.

Ugh. I have also seen in the past where APMEX has listed very desirable traits in a stock photo, but they tell you it is a stock photo. As an example, I once noticed they had an OGH example of a coin with a gold CAC sticker on the slab and the coin was toned beautifully, but in the listing it mentioned it was a stock image. I thought that was not cool.

On the other hand, I have found a few interesting coins on their site and I simply email them first to confirm the coin in the image is the coin on-hand, and have they confirmed it as such and the coins were quite nice.

A few years ago I brought this very subject up about APMEX. I didn't think it was right. I got raked over the coals about my opinion. I'm glad to see others agree with me that this is not a good thing, in my opinion it's bordering on immoral. I wonder what APMEX would do if you returned a coin to them that they never owned in the first place? That would be interesting.

I had something sorta familiar to this over a dozen years ago. Bought a Buffalo key coin off a well-known dealer and the same coin appeared in a coin magazine being sold by somebody else. I assumed that there was some sort of sale from one to the other.

More likely the stolen pic has the white background added. The one with the black background shows a similar color outside the rounded corners of the slab. The one with the white background shows very unusual lighting in the lower segment between the coin and the ring. That's not a shadow.

From what I've seen, APMEX is one powerfully slimy company. The hagfish of coin dealers.
    .
I will NEVER buy coins from them after what I saw them pull with a VF30 1855/54 overdate in a mislabeled NGC slab as an 1855 normal date. They described it as an 1855 normal date but clearly priced it as an overdate (about 3X more than a normal date), setting one up for the old switcheroo where a buyer recognizes the overdate and buys the coin with the expectation of receiving the overdate but then receives a normal date from APMEX (paying 3X the normal date price). Of course, they also had their switcheroo disclaimer posted above by Bikergeek in this auction as well. I don't recall if they accepted returns on that auction. My guess would be that they didn't.
    .
I contacted them about that auction to ask if one will receive the coin shown, and to tell them that the auction had the appearance of a triple charged switcheroo and got nowhere with them. I was told I had to wait a week to talk to a numismatist there. I decided then to NEVER EVER buy a coin from APMEX.

When the US Mint started producing the uncirculated 5-ounce America the Beautiful silver bullion coins, APMEX was selling rolls of them in the original mint tubes as were the other official distributers. A lengthy discussion ensued here when it was revealed that APMEX was going through these original mint tubes and removing the best specimens to submit to the grading services for slabbing while the rejects were then repackaged in the original mint tubes and sent out to their customers without any disclosure that the best coins had already been removed.
