Went to the Long Beach Show Wednesday

Thanks to Stacks for buying it and keeping it alive. There will be an other one in September. You can still go tomorrow. Not sure about Saturday. Same hall.

If you prepay admission, you won't wait as long to get in. When I arrived, there was a line going to the Mexican border to get into the hall. As I had a prepaid ticket, I got in much more quickly. They had some logistical issues that I think they corrected within 1/2 hour of my arrival.

It's a slimmed down show. Since Stack's bought it, they are the only ones with an on site auction, and have the most table space, though Heritage is still there. Most of the familiar vendors were there, but some (like Legend) were not. Also didn't see Todd re his coin photos (his father and I are buddies, I missed speaking with him).

If you have pre 1965 silver, you can sell it at the show. Check with a few buyers, as prices vary.

My favorite vendor was Pierre Fricke from somewhere in Texas. He has jars of Large Cents, priced $10, $20, and $25, in addition to having Large Cents in 2 X 2s, and slabbed, in most grades. I saw an 1847 which would grade VF 30 in the $25 jar, for example. If interested, you could find many dates in these jars.

Saw many coins in 2 X 2s running the gamut. Several dealers had nice runs of IHCs in RD and RB Unc. Lots of the usual suspects available - Morgans and Walkers in MS 65, some better, some stickered, some not (a lot depends on the particular dealer).

Because a number of vendors were not there (like a number of people from back East and not as many from places like Ohio or Texas), I didn't see many Capped Bust or Barber Halves (or Barber material in general). Not too many SLQs, or Trade Dollars, either, but they were there if you looked for them. Except for the Early Copper dealers, not much early 19th century material. There's always late 19th and early 20th century US gold available.

I noticed more Mexican coins available than in the past. Ditto re old US currency. The guy selling swords wasn't there.

Carl Bombara is a bit like the John Danreuther of old U.S. collector bills. I was watching him interact with customers, and spoke with him myself. He seems to know everything re what was printed in which Federal Reserve bank, in which year, domination and color seal, and which bill serial numbers in all of this are scarce, and which are not.

Long line to submit coins at PCGS when I arrived. NGC and ANACs were also there, but didn't seem to be as busy.

I visited with my usual dealer friends who were there, and other than Wei, who used to post on these boards frequently, didn't recognize any other show attendees. Unlike in the past, I did not see a list of dealer / exhibitors when I entered, nor was anyone selling coin supplies.

If you're a local, you might want to check it out. I spent 3 hours there and thought it was worthwhile. Only transaction I did was unloading some pre 1965 silver.

Thanks for the recap. What were dealers paying for 90%?

Thank you for the report. I've been dying to hear about the 'new' LB show!

I wanted to be there but had pre-existing plans and couldn't make it.

According to a friend who attended, it was slower than normal, likely due to the late announcement of the show's resurrection. And apparently not a ton of retail buying in the $1k-10k range but reasonable wholesale business.

Yesterday (Wednesday) was crazy busy. Lots of action all day. A great surprise for the revamped Long Beach Expo. I am personally excited for the future of the show and hold expectation that it will be growing and fruitful.

I enjoyed seeing the WWII Bronze 43-s and 44 steel cents. They’re out of my league but I like seeing them in person. Was there for part of the day on Wednesday. Long Beach was very windy that day. Lots of sunshine though. The line to get in was long but not as big as the F.U.N. show.

Legend had a table near the front. Didn't notice coins in the cases. Probably a buy trip for Laura.
