A number of records fell tonight in the Heritage Auction. There were the usual strong showings from Mickey Mantle and Nolan Ryan cards...but Willie Mays cards were noticeably strong, maybe finally catching the eye of collectors and investors. Also, PSA-10s from the 1970s continue its amazing run. And MBA diamonds did affect prices to the upside.

I think that is a false conclusion as all of the non-stickered cards from your list also showed an upside.
And the biggest gainer (6X+) from your list was a non-stickered card, the 1979 Ryan PSA10.
I would have thought the ‘73 Clemente would have brought more than 55k if the ‘73 Mays brought 6 digits. I have always viewed that Clemente as a iconic 70’s card, more so than the Mays (IMHO) That 65 Mantle is a sweet card and I think you got it at a good price, I bet you’re excited, 65’s pop and are personally my favorite design of all the 60’s Topps. Congrats man…..
Nice pickups Monte! Regarding the '55 Topps Mays, the price was crazy. I did sell one directly to another collector a couple of years ago for $13,000.

Very nice cards...I like that 1966 Mays #1 PSA 8 (SHARRRP)...I have an affinity towards #1 cards from sets both from a significance point of view (I.e. 1962 #1 Maris, 1989 Upperdeck #1 Griffey etc. Yes Topps put some THOUGHT into their #1 cards) and also from a condition point of view...i.e. old set collectors/hobbyists put rubber bands around stacks of cards in numerical order and the #1 card on the end of a baseball card set collector box would often get damaged so it seems #1 cards are a bit harder to find in nice condition...Just thought of this----Did production card sheet cutting out the #1 card lead to centering issues over the 50's ,60's, 70's and 80's ???? (Probably So???),,,seems like it would
almost 8,000 for the 83 tony gwynn psa 10 topps amazing.
Hard to believe that someone paid $40K for a 1979 Nolan Ryan. With auctions it just takes two people with a lot of excess cash.

When I unloaded most of my collection last year the 10 Gwynn I have stayed with me. This card is going to be on fire forever.
The 65 Mantle is such a great card with the color and eye appeal, and the 1966 Maysas card #1 is a tough card to find in high grade. Congrats!
Do the prices listed in this thread include Heritages Buyer's Premium?
BTW in my state the sales tax on the 1973 Mays would have been near $12,000

If OK - Memory Lane closed last night and I've needed one of these for my 1955 WS collection of items like press pins, ticket Stubbs, Dodger schedule, WS program, '55 team photo set...etc.
Nolan Ryan and Mickey Mantle -- like investing in APPLE.
Just referring to my post last year.
kind of seems like that now whenever i see auctions on heritage and REA auctions. there cards go for more then any of the other vintage stars do. aaron and clemente go for alot but the big two right now are ryan and mantle.
Funny thing Is my son and I were just talking about this last week. We were discussing rookie cards and valuable cards in each set over the last 60 or 70 years. The one thing we mention is that the rookie card and use it as always the most valuable whether it is Pete rose 1963 or Mike Schmidt in 1973. The only constant is that a card in the 50s and 60s was usually Mantle. Once you got to the 70’s and 80’s strangely enough the most valuable card outside of the top rookie(s) was Nolan Ryan. These two are always a constant.
I sat out the Memory Lane Auction...but had five (5) cards in this auction. These two (2) cards did very well...and set a record for the assigned grade as well as being MBA-Silver diamond cards.
