A so called dollar that you just cant get in a tpg holder BUT

ScarsdaleCoinScarsdaleCoin Posts: 5,433 ✭✭✭✭✭

Guess folks just have to make their own….thought I would share this example.

SCD HK 908 and HK 909 are listed in the Hibler Kappen book / system but NGC has chosen not to encapsulate them as they are associated with hate groups / extremist organization
I get it and respect it…

At Scarsdale Coin folks know we won’t buy or sell World Trade Center coins (we lost 6 personal friends during this event so it’s too close to home)

However I do understand why someone would want to try to kinda match the NGC holder for their collection if they are collecting SCD

Just sharing …. What about you.

Anything you would NOT collect?

Speaking strictly as a buyer and seller, I can't really think of anything.
After all, these things are history. It's not like you espouse their philosophy. I've bought and sold so many nice Reichsmark pieces over the years. It didn't mean I'm a friend to the Nazi party !

Exactly -- I have a few 1925 Stone Mountain commemoratives that are also DDOs. No problem.

Plus several Third Reich coins [even though they bombed my UK parents]

Is there anthing I would NOT collect? If it is because of politics, no. These are pieces of history, good, bad and indifferent. Someone said that those who ignore history are distined to repeat it.

There are things I choose not to collect, like a lot of the stuff the mint is selling these days. It's too expensive in many cases and covers topics which are too trivial.

Here's a KKK piece I have. The bigotry speaks for itself.

I believe that there have been two KKKs. The first one was after the Civil War. It had a revival in the early 20th century, even to the point of have a big march in Washington. There are still members who used to get on shows like the one hosted by the late Jerry Springer. I've not heard of them recently.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I remember about 20+ years ago I lived in the Poconos (PA) and there were KKK members handing out flyers at a traffic light. It really creeped me out and I was an adult at the time.

The KKK is often thought of as just anti-Black but it was also anti-Catholic and anti Jewish. This medal is an excellent example of that.

To each their own, and people can collect - or not collect - for any reason.

However, if we exclude anything that could be offensive or controversial then there wouldn't be much left.

I have Nazi coins and counterstamps, and communist coins and counterstamps, for example, despite the fact that I am not a Nazi or a communist. I collect history.

I do have a few counterstamped coins that are so offensive that I would never post a photo or even describe them, and I keep them apart from my main collection. But they are still historical, even if in a bad way, so I have them.

There are lots of things I wouldn't collect but there's no reason to risk a thread by expounding on them. I will say this much, when it comes to SC$'s or medals I avoid anything with a hole in it.

Your comment is an echo chamber for some and sarcasm for the rest. 😝

I do not like the hole pieces either, however many of the SCD were made that way as they were sold with ribbons to wear at the event

Generally speaking, if they are listed as "holed" they can also be found un-holed. I tend to be patient

One group of items which are more historically accurate if they are holed are 19th century political tokens. Yes, they were passed out like calling cards for candidates, and they were sometimes used as substitutes for money, but they also worn on pins or suspended from ribbons.

Most pieces that were made of silver were made for collectors. Those who want the real campaign items sometimes don’t regard those as highly although their mintages can be quite low, like less than 25 or even 10.

Though I don’t collect them I have always been intrigued by Large Cents with the square nail hole in them. That’s a real sign of being genuine to me.
