Are You Planning On Or Have You Liquidated Any Cards To Invest In The Gold/Silver Markets?

With the hot precious
metals market seems somewhat tempting. Gold over 4k an ounce, silver over $50. Both continue to rise.

Hi @BLUEJAYWAY, I was actually thinking about selling my silver now to upgrade my silver later. I have a small group of Walking Liberty haves and Morgan & Peace dollars in cull and G-4 condition that I was thinking about selling now, and if the price of silver goes back down later, I would scoop up some VG examples to keep going on my set. I am a "set completer" in both cards and coins, so I get a rush from filling in my missing slots whether it be in a 9-pocket Ultra Pro page or a Whitman folder.

However I am just one data point and I am curious what others think. Silver right now is certainly going through some interesting times and it can make one think about trading cardboard for precious metal.

Conventional wisdom would have suggested buying at the beginning of the year. It still may be worthwhile with predictions of 5K oz. for gold sometime soon.

So glad psa made it hard to get things graded for vintage cards the last three years. Made me look at coins more. been insane and fast. I wonder what this will do to pcgs. Now a lot of quality high grade coins are now just being melted and grading doesn’t even add much value and is a negative cost adding almost no value from what I can tell.

I'm not selling cards to do it and not buying the physical gold but I did add to a position of a publicly traded company that mines for gold earlier today.

Have been liquidating my sports cards that are less appealing/duplicates to buy TCG/Pokemon cards that also have been rising a bit.

Funny stuff. No matter the opinions on junk, I’ve got Frank to thank for making ‘90 Leaf my slam dunk for all the years it was commanding good money. I still keep a few of them around so I have somewhere to heap my admiration.

Didn't sell cards, but in the same boat as handyman. Discouraged with PSA and started picking up silver rounds two and a half years ago just for kicks making a couple purchases a month. Accumulated around 800 ounces of silver.

Just 6-10 oz of gold can now get you a PSA 1-2 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle and 16oz for a PSA 4.
T206 Red Cobb SGC 3 for 1oz of gold.

Rumor has it that PCGS will be focusing all their efforts into grading Chuck E Cheese tokens and vintage coins will have to take a back seat.

Rather have the gold in this market. I think if push comes to shove more people are apt to take gold in trade than a sports card. Gold is universally traded. Larger market as well. There is just something special and appealing about the yellow metal. Been that way for 1000's of years

You guys just made me buy more shares of Newmont Corporation. I get that the shiny stuff is cool but I like the idea of getting rid of it with a click click.

I suppose that is the same as keeping your awesome cards in the Vault. But I always want the cards in hand.

I have never purchased gold bullion. is it easier to sell/trade the smaller units rather than a full ounce at a time? like 1/10 ounce, 1/4, 1/2 or the small 1 gram bars.

I know it is cheaper to purchase a full ounce at a time, just thinking about the potential resale.

As a coin collector this pains me to say, but for the purposes of an investment, liquidation for cash at fair market price to a deep liquid market is of paramount importance. Unless you are a coin collector or are keeping physical bullion for intrinsic reasons, holding the investment in ETF form in a brokerage or retirement account is the most sensible and cost effective way by far.
All metals had heavy pullback yesterday but positioning was probably getting extreme. It's a great long term investment especially for those over exposed to Nasdaq and AI.

Cannot help but notice how strong the precious metals markets have been. I love cards but a lot of the middle-lower end and junk wax era stuff has underperformed all assets this year. I hold a decent amount of the higher end 1989-2000 era unopened and the market is just kind of quiet.

Choosing right or playing in the top 5% of the market has really paid off for some. Higher end vintage, Jordan/Kobe and Pokemon, and certain modern players or rare high end inserts seems to be where the best returns have been. Curious what others experience has been.

One might speculate that true junk wax unopened supply may still very well be near equal to all that has ever been opened.

Should have sold all my 88-92 unopened during the pandemic. Now its not even even worth the effort.

For pure nostalgia i recently purchased a really nice magnetic acrylic case to place one of my 90 Fleer Basketball boxes in. As such the acrylic case is worth more than the contents.

  • Gold is the ultimate long term investment. It gains, but steadily and just sits there. If you have extra money, why not. All commodities will do. Cardboard can be both liquid and long term. I have a narrow niche investment(unopened) but it shows unstoppable gains so I'll stay where I'm at. I've done the gold and silver thing for a few years now. I'm about done now, even though it's not near done gaining, probably. They all just sit quietly in vaults and closets collecting dust. One is a lot funner than the other though.

Silver was ~$50 per ounce when this thread started, and now 2 and 1/2 months later it is at $70 and flirting with $80. Wild ride for silver this year for sure. It sure is tempting to consider dumping silver and buying cardboard.

I'm a little leery of long-term silver and gold demand as there has been tremendous effort put into advancement of improved conductivity materials for electronics and a large focus on recycling of these materials. You may get different estimates of where we are on the substitution curve, but when considering an investment in Noble Metals that's where I would train my eye.

In 1980 Gold was at $2600; in 2001, it was $492. Be very cautious when buying gold when it's at an all-time high because the market will eventually drop.

With the recent finds in China of 2500 tons of gold, I fully expect that to have an impact on the market as well.

Folks, Note that $2600 is an inflation adjusted price. Still who ever purchased in 1980 and held has lost a ton of money.

If someone had invested $650 in 1980 in gold they would have around $4000 today.
The same $650 placed in a decent S&P 500 fund in April of 1980 would yielded magnitudes more money!

Both metals have their place. As do cards. If you're not a professional trader best to just buy and hold some of each.

Although I have far more allocated to stocks than alt investments, I have a strong dislike for charts with arbitrary start dates that don't account for dollar cost averaging.

I recently sold/traded some 90% silver dimes, quarters, halves that I've had for years (about $300 invested) and moved it into an ounce .999 buffalo round. One thing I like about the coin/bullion market is that the premiums are pretty well set and predictable with no tax, fees, or 1099's for a little guppy like me. I live in the now and don't care about S&P comparisons or inflation..... it's just funny money acquiring something that will make me smile today and pass on to my heirs later.
