1839 was a very good coin year

Any other member notice that? There are a number of important types, transitions & varieties. Here’s a sampling:

  • Large Cent (Coronet head) =
    a) 1839 head of 1838;
    b) silly head;
    c) booby head;
    d) 1839/6.

  • Large Cent (Braided hair) =
    a) 1839 type of 1840.

  • Liberty Seated Half Dime & Dime =
    a) type 2 no drapery.

  • Liberty Seated Quarter =
    a) type 1 no drapery.

  • Capped Bust Half Dollar (Reeded edge “HALF DOL” on rev) =
    a) large letters;
    b) small letters;
    c) 1839-O.

  • Liberty Seated Half Dollar =
    a) type 1 no drapery;
    b) type 2 drapery/no motto.

  • Liberty Seated Dollar =
    a) type 2 flying eagle rev no stars (Gobrecht original).

  • Gold $2.5 (Classic head) =
    a) P, C, D & O mints.

  • Gold $5 (Liberty head) =
    a) type 1 no motto. P, C & D mints.

  • Gold $10 (Liberty head) =
    a) 1839/8 aka covered ear type of 1838;
    b) type 1 no motto type of 1840.

    I haven't been fortunate enough to put my camera in front of the quarter, Gobrecht dollar, or any of the gold pieces. I agree that it was a good transitional year for U.S. coinage overall.

    So, PCGS book value for a complete set in XF40 is 85k+. Most of that is obviously the branch mint gold.

    That doesn't include the 39/6 cent (8k), small letters half (140k), or Gobrecht dollar (27k).
