How would this grade at PCGS? This was from the HERITAGE AUCTION ON 2/23/2001 in a SEGS VG8 holder.

    My guess - G6

Grading early coinage is not easy. This is because of the way they were struck. Knowledge is king and here one must know the history of production.

HA did not endorse the grade specifically: https://coins.ha.com/itm/additional-certified-coins/1806-25c-quarter-vg-8-segs-b-9-r1-blue-gray-and-charcoal-toning-overlays-the-surfaces-of-this-well-worn-example-there-are-light-and-moderate/a/248-7708.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515 They said: Blue-gray and charcoal toning overlays the surfaces of this well worn example. There are light and moderate abrasions scattered over both sides, none of which are worthy of individual concern.

The TPGs give a lot of leeway to these and I don't think they are as consistent with their grading decisions as they are with much more common coins. I see the coin as a G4 (using both images provided to make a hybrid interpretation) but think it most likely would grade G6.

The Bust and the date are strong. Some stars and reverse lettering are weak. Given the type, I'd say that it would get a G-6, even though some design elemens are weak or missiing.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Wow! Are those two the same coin? The OPs images look G6- cleaned... the second darker images look like a straight-grade G6...

I took them both, excess glare the first time around probably. Or you can check out the HA images. For whatever reasons Segs called it vg.
