    Happy Playoff Sunday !

I am curious, at what spot price point of silver & gold will Carr Art get melted for precious metal content ?

    I'll guess $275 oz silver & $5,500 gold.

Answering a question with a question: At what spot price does the **collector premium ** of MM items dissolve?

My off-the-top-of-my-head answer would be "it depends". The only variable is not spot price.

Another pair of variables include collector interest and collector population. If there is a large enough population of collectors that have a a strong enough interest in owning a particular piece, then it is likely that collector premium will be retained.

This variable pair also raises the variable of which MM item one is referring to. I suspect that some MM items will retain a collector premium, while other may not.

And, like any coin, it also depends on the owner/seller and buyer characteristics. I would never take one of my cherished MM items into a LCS to sell. I would look to sell to the population of interested collectors. OTOH, my heirs may not cherish said items, and bring them to a LCS and get only spot...even at today's spot rice.

Bottom line...too many variables to say at X spot price, all collector premium evaporates on MM items.

I think some of the gold items have already reached that point. The silver might take longer unless it’s something more common.

I guess the question could also be asked will a collector step up and buy the 1848 CAL and 1908 Double Eagles as collectibles now that melt is approaching $4500 each or do they get destroyed? There are so few to start with.

  • TomBTomB Posts: 22,886 ✭✭✭✭✭

Most of the pieces that I have from Dan are gold, and some must have low mintages, but I don't see myself having these destroyed. Each of the pieces below is either a full ounce or struck on a double eagle, but they are not getting melted. I do find it interesting how their colors are so different.

Yes @Orlena gold may keep going, but having $15,000 tied up in 3 Carr Double Eagles gets a bit pricey. Maybe $20,000 is the selling point :)

I can't imagine what the people are doing that own his 2.5 oz Octagon Gold pieces.

I view all these as a sunk cost. Essentially, it costs me nothing to continue to own them (aside from an incremental increase in my insurance) and I enjoy them, so I see no reason to sell them. Of course, if one needs the money for other things then that is a factor, as well, but I am fortunate in that instance.

I have no plans of selling either and it's cool to own the DE's along with the 1922D Winged Saint. It's a hobby for me. At some point my heirs will make the decision on what to do. That said, maybe there is a crazy number out there that says, It's time....

I'm dealing with an heir thing. Mother pursued silver jewelry, chains, rings... Actual poundage, all new in the box and receipts. Most acquired when silver was well under $10 an ounce. All mine & wife now. Figuring out what to do as sorting continues. Shops are not buying silver jewelry, but refiners are. This is actually my first group of precious metal to rehome while paper silver contracts in USA keep price of physical silver down 30% ish versus Asia. May trade it for ASEs or in house silver rounds if I feel silver has more room to run. At the moment I feel it does have more potential from what I have read.

I've considered it, given that I missed the opportunity when they were first produced, botched a BST offer here because I was too picky, and passed the couple of times they appeared on eBay because I thought they were too expensive at the time (plus, eBay). My bank account is thankful but I'm still kicking myself repeatedly.

I did snag a 2013 1oz Buffalo centennial about two years ago, and I'm keeping that one.

Interesting problems. I have looked at my quarter ounce pieces of Dan and now have 4.5 ounces + of them along with some other Goldies.
Love my 1933 $5 and Stella also...Hate to think what new iterations will sell for! I wonder if some of these series are finished or if he will soldier on??

Unfortunately, I know with certainty that several of our Glendale Coin Club 50 gram gold medals done by Dan have been melted over the years by a few of our club members (not me!!!). With the melt value over $7k each now, it's literally a chunk of change!

    (3) Shield cent dated 2026 with an omega

    AND

how about a 1933 $2.5 Indian Head Quarter Eagle ? to go with the $5 Half from previous years

    Thanks in "Advance !"

    .

The "1933" Quarter Eagle is on the list to do (eventually).

    I've already done "2009-S VDB" over-strikes.
Due to 2025 being the last year for circulating Lincoln Cents, I think i will focus on "2026" over-strikes.
    But I am still deciding.

    .

Hasn't the Mint stated there will be a 2026 dated cent to be part of its yearly Mint set like the Kennedy half(?)

    .

Yes, but they likely won't have a "D" mint mark and won't have a Greek letter privy mark.

    .

Maybe you've already seen it, but on the Mint's Semiquincentennial page, the image for the 2026 cent shows a 1776-2026 cent with a D mint mark. Clicking that image takes you to a placeholder page for the 2026 Uncirculated Mint Set w/ P&D. So looks like we'll have P, D and presumably S mint cents this year. Still haven't seen if they plan to sell the cents in rolls/bags as well like they do with the half dollars.

    Jump in or flee ?

So glad the majority of my Carr Art is struck or re-struck on silver.

I have a feeling the Carr items that are inherited by non-collectors will find their way to refineries. That will help lower availability of many tokens.

    True.
    .
For my collection, I have noted a number of items that should be sent to Great Collections, rather than brought to a LCS (or garage sale LOL). I am confident that when the time comes, that my daughter will execute my wishes on those. All of my Moonlight Mint pieces will be on that list.

Obviously I really like Dan's work, but am afraid the rise in gold prices may erase the numismatic premium of the gold pieces and so tome degree the smaller platinum and even silver pieces. Some may be melted, and shudder to think of the prices of upcoming precious metal pieces....

I believe all Daniel Carr’s work will always hold a premium. If some get melted because of “emergency sells”, that will just make his pieces even rarer‼️
We need to thank Dan for minting such cool pieces, because I wouldn’t have invested as much in numismatic items if it wasn’t for him‼️👍

I’ve never lost money on anything I purchased from him……………. and recently I’ve made a lot of money in my purchases with him, I believe that we all have‼️

I have to agree about worrying about new silver and gold purchases. Hopefully Dan won’t put as high of a premium as the USMINT on his new stuff, that would help on new purchases.
I did notice that the remaining “Big Owl “ and “Winged Liberty “ on his site have remained the same original price, and have not been raised,( not like the USMINT that has raised all their prices according to the raise in metals prices)‼️
    Thank you Dan‼️‼️👍🎯

Insane or incredibly generous ? I'd say incredibly generous !

Who knew gold would clearly lift above $2,000 an ounce ?

Well other than the gold bugs &...

Silver just hit $98.99 an ounce a few minutes ago which means there's about $77 melt in Morgan and Peace

40% Ike have $31 melt contained in them

Silver just topped $103.01 in USA !
It had ready hit $130 in ASIA in 2026.
While USA markets trade paper silver contract promises the rest of planet trades physical silver.
