Standing Liberty Quarters Set Finished After 50+ Years

I have always considered this design as one of the best. The treatment at the front rims. The confident portrayal of Liberty. The only silver coin with an eagle in flight. [NOTE: Gobrecht Dollars also portray an eagle in flight.]

The fact that the date easily wore off lends a fragility and concomitant collector admiration to earlier full date examples.

Started in ‘60s as a collector searching cent rolls. A key early mentor got me to begin working on a BU Washington Quarter set. Not a clear memory, but prior to ’73, Santa brought me this Capital Holder for Standing Liberty Quarters. The first additions were the excellent 1925, which still looks great to my eye, and three late S-Mints. For decades the collection had these four coins – the set was impossible to complete. The 1917 type 1 was purchased last century and made a handsome addition to the set. Some well circulated type 3s were added from a 90% silver purchase.
The set got re-energized in 2011 adding 9 type 2s at a coin shop purchase; in 2016 adding three type 2s from a DLRC sale and three others at a coin show. The 27-S was picked up in 2018 at a coin shop while on vacation. Four nice AU examples were added in 2023. With the 90% silver market situation, there was an opportunity to finish the set.

I am delighted that the impossible set is finished, confident that it is eliciting heavenly smiles from my parents, and admit that the set has a face only its collector could love….

Nice set! One of the best designs. Not to be "that guy" but it isn't the only silver coin with an eagle in flight.

Cool set! Is there a story attached to the 1916?

I wanted a clear full date. Coin looks good/solid VF. Given 90% silver, I did not 'spend' a lot on it.

SLQs are nice coins. Your set looks beautiful. Congrats on completing and interesting set with a variety of grades. I considered collecting them once, but only have a nice, gray 1917 T1.

Are you saying the 1916 was a junk silver find?

The way collecting used to be and should be… no slabs, stickers, and fancy labels, just the coins in their album.

Very nice set with a great story to boot!

Nice silver coins always present well in a black Capital holder.

You are a true collector - this was clearly a labor of love with a personal significance. And you never cease to surprise with projects. But it is also inspiring -- thanks as always for sharing.

Congratulations on a job and set well done. I am one of those collectors who tried, but failed, to build a complete set. It must give you great satisfaction. just curious; what was the final date? James

As a coin collector back in the day who moved on to other collectibles and then came back, I admire your persistence in working on this Liberty Standing collection over the years.

The 1916 and 1918/7 S were always the stoppers. I take it those silver coins accumulated from your boyhood finally made it possible to complete the set. :)

What a story that would be!
The 1916 was funded, in large part, by silver stacked long ago.

The 1928-D. The AU example purchased kind of sticks out compared to the other type 3s.

It looks great in that capital holder. Few coins are as beautiful as the standing liberty quarter design. Iconic and they saw so much use that it is hard to find collectible examples. Any collector would dream of and love to own that set!! I’ve been working on a date set since around 2018. I only need one coin and I’ve really been dragging my feet for the last few years. Rather than a 1916; I have a 17 D type one and a 17 S type two in my collection. Congratulations on a beautiful set!! <3

    Such a great accomplishment! @JBN

    And man it looks good!!

I started mine at the ANA in Seattle 1990, and I often wonder if I'll ever complete it, but it is still one of my favorite for all of the 20th Century designs.
