1849 H10C - Guess the grade - my earliest die state - grade revealed

I realize its difficult to assess grades on images, but this one may be surprising. My apologies for the scratched up holder.

(Sellers images.)

Quite a bit of this info has been covered in previous threads, but, here it is anyway.

This 1849/6 H10C 9 over far 6 is notable for its early die state, indicating that it was struck from a die that had not yet undergone significant wear or alterations. It has been said that Early die states are often sought after by collectors due to their clarity and the sharpness of the underlying 6 details, which are more pronounced compared to later strikes.

The 1849/6 H10C 9 reverse exhibits a notable feature characterized by widely spaced reverse die cracks. These cracks are significant as they can provide insights into the minting process and the conditions under which the coin was produced, and are a definitive pick up point for later dies state of the variety. The presence of such die cracks often indicates wear and stress on the die used to strike the coin.

Thank you for your interest and comments!

I'd say AU-58, but the way things go these days, it could be called MS-61.

AU 55 or 58. The marks on the head as well as on the reverse are in the wrong place for me. The color and strong striking are terrific.

Is that giant hoop under the 9 to the right part of the 6 because that would be one big ass 6 ?

The '9 over widely placed 6' obverse was used with two reverse dies. The earlier marriage, V-2 (your example) has a nice reverse die crack from ST down to UN and does indeed show the under-digit better than the later marriage, V-6. There is also the '9 over closely placed 6', also paired with two reverses, making the V-4 and V-5 marriages. The 1849 V-1 and V-8 also sport under-digits (likely 846 and 1--9, respectively).

I can believe that the TPGs would rate your V-2 as a 63, though 58 would not surprise me.

Look at the shape of a 6 on a normal 1846 Half Dime.

My first thought was AU58 which means I'd expect it to be in a 61 or 62 holder.

Many old slabs have this wrong.
All the 1849 half dime overdates have been proven to be 9/6.

I kind of expected grade assessments to be all over the place looking at some images. You never know with these Old Green Labels, I've heard that they were on the conservative side back then.

    Thank you for the comments!
