I recently sent a batch of 32 coins to CAC through Dave Kahn. Just got the results back. To
Cut to the chase, 20 out of the 32 coins I sent were approved. A far cry from @pursuitofliberty , but I can certainly hang my hat on those results.

27/32 were coins that I had “made” myself with PCGS, although 16 of those 27 were coins I had cracked out of other TPG holders at various points in the past 7 years or so. The other 11 were raw purchases.

Hopefully readers can extract something useful from my notes and TVs on a few of my favorites, including a few that did not sticker.

  1. 1806 Knob 6 Sm Stars 50c (VF 30) - APPROVED. A raw LCS purchase from earlier this year.

  2. 1830 Capped Bust H10c (AU 58+) - APPROVED. This was a raw eBay purchase. Again earlier this year. One of the best raw eBay purchases of my life

  3. 1853 arrows 10c (AU 58+) - APPROVED. Cracked this coin from an NGC 62 holder a while back and it resided in my Dansco until I sent the whole album off for grading.

  4. 1917 S SLQ (AU 58+FH) - DENIED.
This was hands down the most surprising result to me from this submission. I know better than to “expect” a gold sticker, but of all the coins in this batch, this was the one I thought had the best chance. Cracked out of an ANACS 62FH holder a while ago. I can almost always acknowledge why my coins may not pass muster in certain areas…….this is a head scratcher for me. Thoughts/comments welcome.

  5. 1958 D Franklin 50c (MS 66+ FBL) - APPROVED. Cracked out of NGC 66* FBL holder a while ago. This was a no brainer (although I obviously thought the SLQ was as well)

  6. 1875 CC trade dollar (XF 45) - APPROVED. Raw purchase from my LCS in 2022.

  7. 1936 WLH (MS 66) - DENIED. Another result I was a bit surprised with, but can’t win em all. I’m guessing JA saw it as a choice 65.

  8. 1865 “fancy 5” 2c (MS 66BN) - APPROVED. Cracked out of an NGC 65 holder (not an older holder either, surprisingly). Maybe should’ve sent to JA as it was and hoped for a gold, but I’ll take it as a beaned top pop PCGS plate coin any day.

  9. 1875 S 20c (XF 45) - APPROVED Another raw eBay purchase. Love the wholesome, original look. Figured JA would, too.

  10. 1913 T1 Buffalo 5c (MS 66+) - APPROVED Another NGC crackout. This was in one of their vault box holders and was graded “95” when I cracked it. Color is much more intense than the TVs allow.

Here are a few others posted quickly that did NOT pass. I don’t waste my time or money sending CAC coins that I know are over graded or not quality material, so I had hopes for all of these. Can’t win em all though….well most of us can’t!

1954 Washington MS 67

1892 Colombian MS 63

1892 O Barber dime MS 62

1923 Peace Dollar MS 65 (this was my one “Hail Mary” in the submission). The toning is A++ for a Peace Dollar imho, but PCGS definitely bumped the grade because of it. The scratch across the cheek was the CAC killer here. I love the coin but it should be in a 64 holder.

And finally a few others that were APPROVED

1893 Indian cent MS 64BN

1938 D Lincoln MS 65RB

1892 O Barber 10c AU 58

1853 A&R Seated 50c XF 45

Hopefully someone finds this useful…..or at the very least entertaining!

Some beautiful type coins here! I love that 17 type 1 SLQ. <3

Overall, I'd say that was a pretty darn good CAC sub!

Haha I totally meant to @ you in my post. Brain fart. Your BHNC tag must’ve been in my head. Happens to me all the time.

Thank you sir. Your recent sub was an inspiration to us all!

Nice coins. Regarding the scratched Peace dollar, I think JA would not sticker as a 64 either due to the scratch, IMHO.

    Congratulations on a great submission.

    Thanks for sharing.

On the no cac grades my take is it that spots of pvc, patches of hairlines, no matter how small would be issues that the extremely fussy collectors that rely on their judgment and scrutiny and pay for would possibly be upset by. In some cases cac is not willing to sticker at the assigned grade, on others the problems would be a no go regardless.

I miss my Columbian... looked very similar.

    Well done

My only comment is me being not a fan of the color on #4 or #7. Congratulations on otherwise excellent results!

Good point. You’re probably right. Ownership bias :'( I don’t mind admitting to being seduced by the toning on it. I’d normally move straight past a coin with a scratch like this one, but I have little interest in most blast white coins and Peace dollars are TOUGH to source with color like this…..in my experience anyway.

I also have a 1923 in PC63 with similar color that is stickered. Luster is definitely much better on the 64, but the scratch is not minor.

Ownership bias is tough. And very real, especially when we start to fall in love with our coins.

I remember a couple-three years ago I went like 14 for 30 with CAC, and I was really kind of butt-hurt and scratching my head until I really put the critical eye back on them after they returned.

I still disagreed with maybe 5 or 6 (a few of which were marked QT) even after another two or three looks, but the other 10 or 11 in that submission were indeed a failure on my part to look at them objectively enough.

And thanks for the compliment @MEJ7070 - I was pretty fortunate on this last one.

I really appreciate you sharing yours too!

Nice coins, the color on the no grades seems a bit dark for a sticker...Perhaps hiding/muting the luster...

  • humanssuckhumanssuck Posts: 581 ✭✭✭✭✭

Sending toned coins to CAC is a crapshoot. Many of them were likely rejected as QT.

    Very well done!

I also agree that the toning was suspect.

This is a great post! I've had similar results with my submissions. A few things I've noticed, 1. JA has a soft spot for early coinage with original surfaces (who doesnt?!) 2. Walkers are terribly difficult, I've submitted probably five, at least three of those were nicely toned and looked to be better that their assigned grade, not a single one has passed muster. I can seem to call most of the coins I send in with a 75% success rate, unless it's a franklin or a walker (so if you remove the frankies and walkers it's about 75% success rate.) It seems like if they're toned there's an extra level of scrutiny. A blast white Franklin tends to pass for me, toned ones are a crap shoot. 3. I've only ever made two golds. In fairness I'm not trying to find undergraded coins, perse, just ones I like. Most of the coins I collect are Spanish Colonial, which they don't deal with. The things I do deal with are "Box of twenty" Toned Franklins, Old holders AU58 toned Peace Dollars and Lowball stuff. It's pretty specific things, so I don't add a piece terribly often.

I'm BACK!!! Used to be Billet7 on the old forum.

Very nice results, if I were to guess I think the toning was what caused a few not to pass.

    Extremely attractive coins.
Do you have a type set PCGS Registry?
If so, it would be a pleasure to view it.

    Appreciate it!

I do have a PCGS registry but it’s not public yet since it’s still shy a couple of coins.

My CAC 7070 set is complete since they allow NGC and CACG coins. Here’s that one:

I had two similar PCGS MS64 Columbians that did not pass. Reason - PVC.

To me, coins #4 and 7 have poor eye appeal. Not sure if it’s the trueviews or just the toning itself, but they have the look like they’ve been messed with (like cleaned or dipped in something) and then toned/retoned.

I question if they would details grade at cac

  • 1madman1madman Posts: 1,662 ✭✭✭✭✭

Also on coin #7 the strange area of weakness on the letter R in dollar should preclude it from being in a 66 holder
