The Gobrecht seated liberty design as a concept is one of the most beautiful American coinage designs. Unfortunately, when the designs were reworked by Hughes in 1839-40, it was mostly for the worse. Once exception is the half dollar, which resulted in a more balanced design and was actually an improvement over the 1839 no drapery version.

The reverse on Draped Early Gold is outstanding. One of my all time favorites and so glad I picked up a couple years ago.

Background
The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin showed the Nation and the world the very best the United States Mint has to offer. The 21st century vision of the United States Mint, combined with technological advances, enabled the United States Mint to realize the previously unattainable goal of making the coin accessible to all Americans.
Through 21st century technology and the vision of Director Ed Moy, original Saint-Gaudens coin plasters were digitally mapped by the United States Mint. Using the digital design and die-making process, the Saint-Gaudens sculpture—in ultra high relief—has been updated to reflect the year 2009, an additional four stars to represent the current 50 states, and the inscription "In God We Trust," which was not on the 1907 version.
Additionally, a small border was added for a more consistent edge. The 2009 coin will be made of 24-karat gold. Pure 24-karat gold is much more malleable than 22-karat or 90% gold coins, making it better material for striking the ultra high relief.
Characteristics
Obverse: Saint-Gaudens' Liberty, personified by a statuesque woman striding powerfully forward. Liberty is leading the way with a torch in her front hand and an olive branch in the back hand. The United States Capitol dome is also depicted in the background.

Throw a coin enough times, and suppose one day it lands on its edge.
I guess I'll break the trend and post a modern coin with no precious metal. After imaging the whole of the National Park Quarter series, I have a newfound appreciation for the series. It appears to me that instead of simply having designs, the imagery on each quarter (excluding San Antonio) is based on an actual scene and the border is meant to represent a camera lens. You can start to get a sense of depth and realism looking at some of these pieces.

Not a “commem” guy, but I think this is about as beautiful as it gets, from the golden age of beautiful US coins.
It’s not mine, but maybe I’ll pick one up someday.
Other passions include golf, Moto Guzzi motorcycles, and Euro motorcycles in general.

@Bullsitter . I have always thought the Lincoln cent was an attractive coin on both sides. I will add, though I prefer the wheat reverse, I still found the memorial reverse to be attractive and I would not put Licolns in this thread. just my opinion. james
