SHICHI GO SAN (7, 5, 3) BLESSINGS AT SHIZUOKA JAPAN'S SENGEN TEMPLE
Following ShIchi Go San Day which was celebrated on November 15th to honor seven, five and three year olds, Sengen Temple added a day of commemoration this week, offering blessings and handing out gifts to the children.
(The holiday historically arose from ancient times when many children in Japan did not make it to those ages due to child mortality and so the day was one of gratitude for those who did.)
Tokugawa Ieyasu is to Japan what George Washington is to the United States and what Emperor Qin was to China. Each were the first to unify their countries.
In his retirement years Tokugawa Ieyasu resided at Sumpu Castle in what is known as Shizuoka today. The remnants of the castle which remains surrounded by a moat is now Sumpu Castle Park and within it is a statue to Tokugawa Ieyasu and Momijiyama Japanese Garden.
Although one of his sons had become his successor, he continued to "rule" in his retirement.
