I am thinking these three silver dollars were already toned prior to inclusion in this holder

How would anyone know for sure?
I think it is unlikely that they were toned so similarly before put in that holder.

attractive set
Very nice -the colors look natural to me.
Where the set was stored over the years may have caused the tarnish.

Nice coins.
Does it matter
I don’t think capital holders tone anything
But they are not air tight

After doing the required calculations, I’ve narrowed it down to (the) three possible answers as to whether the coins were “already toned prior to inclusion in this holder”:
1) Each coin was color-free when placed into the holder.
2) Each was already toned to the extent that’s apparent now, prior to inclusion in the holder.
3) One or more of the coins was toned to some extent prior to being placed in the holder and toned more, sometime afterwards.
Mystery solved.😉

I was told the collection (a lot of other coins besides these) was in a hall closet for at least 20 years until the collector passed away.

The pictures make it look like the screws in the holder are missing. If this is how they were stored then the holder would let in more air than usual which would increase the probability of humidity and sulphides and other airborne gasses coming in from the outside. But I would still expect more of a gradient to appear in the toning of the coins with the toning being darker on the left side of the coin on the left and darker on the right side for the coin on the right, and darker on the top and bottom of the coin in the middle. Because of that, I’m thinking they already had peripheral toning like you would get from an album or similar prior to being placed in the holder, but then may have darkened just a bit more in the holder.

Especially when they don’t use the screws.
