Dear US coin collectors and enthusiasts,
recently I found this 1895 S Dime in a coin collection I purchased. Could you please help me to determine the grade of this coin and give me a rough estimate about the value?
If you need some more pictures, just let me know.
Thank you in advance and best regards from Germany,
Göttinger

AU, looks lightly cleaned, probably worth around $300 USD

Cleaned and damaged.
Unfortunately those scratches will probably be considered grafitti. It looks like a little Moby Dick above the word 'One'.
Still a very cool coin !
Yeah, unfortunately it had been rolling around in a jar full of loose coins since at least the early 1980's. The accumulation of coins in there was probably never seen as a proper collector's item, so many better coins suffered some scratches.
But this Barber Dime still seems way too nice for my melt bucket, so I'll probably keep it or offer it for sale at a discount price as a gap filler.
XF45, scratched and possibly cleaned by burnishing. A great album coin at the right price.
I see XF details all day long
A solid ef details of a semi-key date to the series. Worth considerably more than melt.

Horrible black area cheek, scratches on other areas.
Advise see what similar pieces bringing on the Bay.
However Your best bet imo - A problem coin dealer could probably help you. Perhaps one of his clients can use it for their album.

AU55/58 Lustre, and the scratches aren’t terrible.
50/50 it straight grades

Due to the scratches on each side, I think you’re too optimistic about the chances of a straight grade. I will, however, join you and @hummingbird_coins regarding the (minority) AU opinion part of the grading equation.

Excellent OP photos of a nice 95-S, by the way!
mfeld’s probably right about the scratches but,

This is (what I think is) the closest comp I could find.

I like the date and MM but sad it has been tweaked a bit.
Mine is CAC63 and had it for some years in a PC holder, thought it might go 64...
Well, just Love coins, period.
AU Details with light cleaning both Obverse and Reverse and scratches. Stevie Wonder would have to be the grader to obtain a straight grade on this coin! CDN Bid in AU50 is $260 so I'd guess at an auction it would probably bring around $220 give or take...
A cleaned and/or scratched AU will typically sell for a larger discount than that from the level of a straight grade example.

Mark, I'm trying to be CHEAP! I have to keep my rep in good standing...

If you’re trying to be CHEAP in order to keep your rep in good standing, I think you failed.
As your estimate appeared to be the opposite of cheap. I suggest that you go back to school for a refresher course in Cheapness.😉

I think graffiti, in this case, "the whale," on the reverse of any dime would turn off a lot of buyers. I consider graffiti worse than cleaned. If it is in fact deemed graffiti, CACG would body bag the coin. The line below the F on the obverse is another distraction.
$158 for a cleaned coin is a good starting point, a coin with graffiti should be worth less. But anything can happen at auctions.
Not even close to UNC.
