I’ve bought a number of Doug’s FE’s & IHC’s over the years, but I think this one’s my favorite. It just may be the most stunning, lustrous RD IHC I’ve ever owned. Plus, there’s a bit of history. This coin was part of the “Jasper Mantooth” sale, which at the time was the #1 IHC Basic set. As soon as I saw it offered, I jumped at it, put in my buy only to find out it was sold already. I must have lost out by mere seconds. The buyer? Doug, of course!
While I have several interesting pieces with numismatic history … a recent pick up that I think is a hoot is this J650. This piece was originally part of one of the few known 1868 Aluminum 16-piece Case Sets produced by the Philadelphia Mint. Its provenance is documented, beginning with Secretary of the Treasury Hugh McCulloch in 1868, passing through McCulloch's heirs, then to Eric Newman, and finally to the Eric P. Newman Educational Foundation and Museum where is was eventually broken up for the Heritage Nov. 2014 Auction - Selections from the Eric P. Newman Collection Part V - New York / Lot #3448

I had never heard of the crazy hounddog collection until now.
Of course they were posted by "CRAZYhounddog" himself ,,, I know this is off topic but I like the PCGS label graphics. I need to ask the question however - is that a hound dog jumping off the ledge or another breed and is the dog jumping at an Eagle?

Another Pattern ... I just had to collect one of the 3 1849 3 cent patterns .... they are just so pure in design and true trials.
This piece was from Stacks Aug 2025 Summer Showcase Auction / Lot #6561 - as noted on the label is Ex Eliasberg which was linked to the earlier Clapp estate, 1942; and then to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; Louis E. Eliasberg, Jr.;
(Stack's) sale of the Estate of Louis E. Eliasberg, Jr., March 2010, /Lot #1281. If I interpret Michael Bourne Recent book on 3 cent patterns correctly - Clapp may have acquired this piece from the S.H. and H. Chapman sale of Dec 1895

@retirednow: great post! Would you mind also posting it in my “Post your Patterns” thread? It would also be a nice fit there.

I've since learned that it is a rather infamous pedigree.
As a GSA collector, I thought that Newman’s one and only GSA dollar was kind of interesting.
