I’ve bought a number of Doug’s FE’s & IHC’s over the years, but I think this one’s my favorite. It just may be the most stunning, lustrous RD IHC I’ve ever owned. Plus, there’s a bit of history. This coin was part of the “Jasper Mantooth” sale, which at the time was the #1 IHC Basic set. As soon as I saw it offered, I jumped at it, put in my buy only to find out it was sold already. I must have lost out by mere seconds. The buyer? Doug, of course!
While I have several interesting pieces with numismatic history … a recent pick up that I think is a hoot is this J650. This piece was originally part of one of the few known 1868 Aluminum 16-piece Case Sets produced by the Philadelphia Mint. Its provenance is documented, beginning with Secretary of the Treasury Hugh McCulloch in 1868, passing through McCulloch's heirs, then to Eric Newman, and finally to the Eric P. Newman Educational Foundation and Museum where is was eventually broken up for the Heritage Nov. 2014 Auction - Selections from the Eric P. Newman Collection Part V - New York / Lot #3448

This is my J305 from the Danali collection (Not sure who was the real name behind this collection)
When the J305 and your J312 designs were formally submitted in 1863 to Secretary of Treasury, Salmon Chase for consideration for the new motto. A letter back to James Pollock (the Mint Director) on December 9, 1863, Secretary Chase stated:
_“I approve your motto, only suggesting that on that with the Washington obverse the motto should begin with the word OUR, so as to read OUR GOD AND OUR COUNTRY. And on that with the shield, it should be changed so as to read: IN GOD WE TRUST” _

Mr. Stack was not related to the famous numismatic family, but a great renowned collector some 100 or so years ago.
Actually he passed away in 1951, about 74 years ago, and was active in the 1940s.
He definitely had some great coins.
The first coins from his collection were sold in 1975, when his then-youngest grandchild turned 25.

This coin was purchased from coin dealer Michael Casper's Morgan dollar collection. He assembled the #3 PCGS Morgan dollar Registry set. I don't believe he was very active in numismatics after selling his set about 15 years ago, but he was involved in selling stamps. Earlier provenance for this piece was Michael Babb. I recall Mr. Babb referring to this piece as "Raspberry Head," or something similar. The reverse is blazing white and extremely clean, but I don't currently have access to its image.
