Grades in from Dad's Estate

When going through my Dad's estate recently I found 4 coins that I thought it would be prudent to get slabbed up. Grades & images are in now. Three out of four straight graded. Not bad Dad, not bad.

    If you hadn't told me the twenty-cent piece didn't straight-grade, I would have expected it to straight-grade. I don't think the obverse scratches near the date are anything to worry about at this grade level, so I will guess that the obverse rim is flattened near five o'clock.

    Yeah I would guess rim damage on the double dime as well.

    I don't see that being much different than the surfaces on the rest of the coin such as the obverse right field. I do see jagged shadows created by that rim at 9 o'clock that I find concerning. IMO, even without seeing the extent of damage or corrosion to that rim, no rim should leave a shadow like that and straight grade. It does show a lot of character for a heavily circulated coin, and it's a special coin as a family heirloom, IMO.

    That’s such a touching thread, and the coin grades look solid too. When taking a breather, I found https://casinosanalyzer.com/free-slots-online/Fluffy-Favourites , and it brought a bit of nostalgia, kind of like rediscovering old collectibles.

    Actually it looks like someone carved a triangle there and fortunately it wasn't labelled graffiti.

    Nice group! I think the damage on the 20c piece is a combination of the bite taken out of the obverse, edge at 10:00, a scratch below Liberty's left foot and above the 5, plausible graffiti in the field near the drapery above the knee (large asterisk), and lots of heavy hits.

    Something's going on at 12:00 o'clock on the double dime also.. The scratch under the foot is small and I would suspect the PCGS label would say "scratch" Does it?

    Damage on the rim at 9:00 yes
    Good pull on the re engraved gown but I'm not sure without the coin in hand.

    The court jester does not play, but gently pulls the strings…

    Damaged is a different no-grade code from scratched. It seems to be a "death by a thousand cuts" sort of designation for this coin. We're finding lots of little things wrong with it, and perhaps that adds up to being called damaged.

    Thanks for all the comments and guesses on the damage. I'm leaning towards edge issues in multiple places. I think if it were the scratch it would grade scratched, not damaged. If they thought it was re-engraving on Liberty I'd expect them to say tooled instead of damaged (I got some tooled grades for just that years ago with a few seated dollars). I'll have to reinspect closely when it's home and maybe post some edge photos if I can get good ones.

    I got the coins in hand today and took a close look at the 20¢.

    The dark line along the reverse rim from 6 o'clock-2 o'clock is actually indented into the coin so that could surely be damage right? Also, the edge from obverse 9 o'clock-11 o'clock is pretty chewed up. That entire edge area is beat up and only has 3 distinctly discernible reeds. The edge just right of 1875 is the same way but to a lesser degree. So that could totally be the damage too.

    All the other spots mentioned look ok to me under a 9x loupe.

    I'll admit when I got the coin and assessed it prior to submitting it I did not look at the edge of the coin. My fault there. I do think it's a pretty coin for a VG, especially when not looking at the edge lol.

    Those 'reeds' could be the damage also, as twenty centers have a plain edge.
