So I bought this 1883 Hawaii 10 cent coin and don’t agree with the grade on the PCGS slab…
I want to get the community’s take on what iyou think the grade is…
Here’s the coin:
What do you think the grade is?
Do you think conservation will get rid of the dark skin revealing luster that I think is there?

Interesting.... Maybe it's my photo's... The coin is not details graded and shows lustre coming though the toning. It's possible it's the angle I took the photos at...

40 seems reasonable. Without seeing in hand and solely from the images, the coin seems to miss 45. I do not think enhancing through a dip will help this coin - instead you will trade issues that will not produce a better outcome. Leave it as it is.

Minimally porous surfaces and I have at 30. The brow, cheek, nose and mustache as well as hair just have too much wear IMHO for higher.

With all due respect I do not see any way this coin can go EF, not a chance IMHO. Not even 35, and I like the Hawaiian dimes.

Unless the photos are bad, I say at the highest a better VF - be careful, sometimes lustre under grime can be light cleaning and becomes apparent once the grime is removed.

I don't think a shield would be required for the 1883 Hawaiian coinage.

It's a Gen 4 holder variation, same as the "Series" and "Coin" on the front.
From what I understand, this label was used for coins that weren't part of any US series and didn't need that notation.

Are those light green pvc specs? If there is hidden luster, a 45 or 50 seems reasonable.

The AU business not warranted and neither is EF as I pointed out earlier. The tell-tale points of brow, beard, mustache, etc. show clear wear not allowing as per earlier, regardless of the slab grade.
