My first gold coin in 2025

The first 8 months of the year I did not find any coins to add. I even took 6 months off from the forum. Recently a few CBH's came my way (you most likely saw the CRO and EAC additions in other threads).
Finally a gold coin spoke to me. Not sure why but I checked Doug Winters website on Saturday. The first try there was nothing new but then all of a sudden an 1839D in P45CAC showed up on his inventory page. As some of you know my main focus in Classic Head $5's (working on the complete variety set of 34 coins), but I also am working on a date set for Classic Head $2.50's. This coins seemed like a perfect specimen for my 1839 slot.
Doug said "This is among the single finest 1839-D quarter eagles in EF45 that I have offered. It is literally perfect for the grade with deep wholly natural russet color with some suggestions of medium orange-gold on the obverse. The detail is excellent for the grade with all of the hair strands on the obverse individually defined. The surfaces are free of marks and the overall level of eye appeal is clearly way better than average for the date in this grade.".
Doug is the go to dealer for Half Eagles (and all old gold as well) and has built some of the top sets out there. If you have not had a chance to read his books about the branch mints, I highly recommend you do. After reading his description I got the wheels in motion. This coin was not going to last long, and it didn't. I bought it Saturday and by Tuesday it was delivered. That is outstanding service.
It is a the first year Dahlonega issued a Quarter Eagle. It is a one year type coin as well. It is as original as they come. It goes well with my 1838D P45+CAC (the only 45+ out there) which is the first year Dahlonega minted HE's and also a one year type coin. I wish the TV's were as accurate as Jenna's photo at DWN. I had hoped to get new photos at the show in Rosemont but didn't find a photographer.

Thanks @johnny9434 A coin I once told Doug I could never own. He said "Don't say never".

Nice buy! Did you take the first photo? It's a nice one.
On an editorial note, I think gold and silver coins almost always look better against a black background. That's why I'm not keen on NGC slabs. Nothing against NGC the company, but IMHO the white inserts dilute the beauty of gold and silver coins.
Thanks @cinque1543 No I did not take that photo. That is Jenna's work at DWN. Her photography is top notch and used in many of his books.

@pcgscacgold I have a few of Doug's books and agree they are a must read. I picked up his 4th edition earlier this year.
Doug's 39-o is very tempting too.
I agree @fastfreddie If it had a sticker I might have grabbed it.

A big congratulations!
You were pretty quick on the trigger, picking that QE up and calling Doug on a Saturday!😉
I was so quick I made sure to call him and secure it before I texted you

Great coin Tom! Congrat's. Love the DWN image as well. That coin is special, for sure.

Hello there, I was the previous owner of that coin. It was bought raw and graded the in the first try at PCGS. I consigned all of my early D and C gold to John Jackson at J&J Coins to take to the Oklahoma Show and Doug bought the whole lot. Every coin was CAC approved except your coin. I almost sent it to CAC but decided not to. I am so glad that you enjoy the coin as much as I did. My 38-D PCGS 45 CAC that was sold looks almost identicle to your 45+. Congrats!!

Thanks for providing some background on the coin @Spud2020 . I keep a journal of my Classic Head coins and try to have as much history as possible. If you have anything else to share you can Private message me.
Yes, our 38D $5's look very similar. Mine is a Fairmont coin. The fields on your coin are outstanding. Thanks for sharing. I have another $5 on the way and that will leave me needing just the 1834 Crosslet to complete Redbook Set. I can see why Doug bought them all. He is the go to dealer for coins like these.

Great coin, conservatively graded. Congrats.
Great coin! You just can't beat that original skin on old gold. I much prefer a nicely toned russet bronze over an unnaturally shiny MS coin.
Proud follower of Christ!
Every coin was CAC approved except your coin. I almost sent it to CAC but decided not to.
So Doug Winter sent the coin to CAC? I'm curious as to why you decided not to send the coin to CAC.
Nice coin.

Very lovely QE, no matter the mint origin, but all the more significant given it’s from a branch mint.
It was a time thing. I bought some property in Colorado.
Thanks @CharlotteDude I appreciate the comment. Keep your eyes out for a post coming in a week or so. You will probable find the coin of interest
