Can build the best collection for you, even better than you think. Ask me how I know. Laura has built the most beautiful gold set for me. Better than I could have imagined on my budget.

From Lincoln proofs, type coins to high end gold. She's worked at whatever level I want to play. I have a #1 MPL set. I want to have a top 5 gold type set. She will make it happen

Congrats. On your collection! They’re a little higher grade than I usually deal with.😉
Curious, are they stickered coins? I know the 1801 Eagle is but didn’t check any more.

I always appreciate seeing exceptional coins.

Dare we ask, "What was your budget?"

And how do you view your expenditures?

  • breakdownbreakdown Posts: 2,284 ✭✭✭✭✭

Love your 1826, 1833 and 1834 half eagles. You are putting together a really nice set of gold.
And I don’t mind you giving credit to the dealer that has helped you.

I have bought several coins from George at Legend. He was great to work with. They definitely cater to collectors with your kind of "budget".

What a wonderful set! Way to go, Doug!

  • DMWJRDMWJR Posts: 6,066 ✭✭✭✭✭

Thank you all, but I can't say how much I appreciate how she has improved my collecting experience. I should have posted a link to the set:

    https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/alltimeset/243569

They are all phenomenal coins. I didn't really have a budget starting out and didn't want limitations. Just the ability to pay for the coins when they came available. If I didn't have the funds, I didn't buy. But I was having so much fun with this goid type set that I sold my big IHC set earlier this year to help fund it.

The biggest thrill for me is in the hunt; finding and buying coins myself for my collections. I don’t think I’d get the same satisfaction if someone else was assembling the collection for me.
That said though, for those big coins in the deep end of the pool, it’s certainly nice to have an experienced dealer that you trust to consult with.

Yes, I agree with this. Finding the Coins, myself, was the fun part and saved me a lot of money by cutting out the middleman. I also devoted all my free time to searching for walkers. It was like a second job for me. I found some spectacular coins. A dealer can’t afford to do that, which severely limits your perspective purchases and availability choices.

I once gave a dealer my ‘want list’ and I never heard from him again. Besides, if a Coin I need shows up in a major auction; I don’t want someone else bidding against me, so that I can buy it later from them for more money. :p

That being said Legend is a great outfit. I do miss their Auctions. I purchased my 1937-S MS 66 CAC Walker from them and it’s spectacular. Best color, luster and strike that I’ve ever seen for the issue.

To quote a contractor that I know:

“Given enough money, anything can be accomplished.”

Same goes for building a great set of coins..🪙

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

I don't disagree and would never tell you how to collect. I did the hunt for years with mixed results. At this point, Laura does the hunting and recommending. I'm content with having a great set.

I bought some very rare patterns from Legend at the end of last year. Top notch coins at pretty reasonable prices. Some were purchased less than their last auction appearance sale prices. Definitely recommend them as a dealer!

It wasn't resubmitted. At her advice, we are waiting until the set is complete before we resubmit for regrade. Some of these are really upper tier coins that should

Thank you. I didn't do it for a registry set. I did it for me. I've been doing this for 30 years, and collected many different series. I still hunt for Lincoln, IHC and pattern varieties and love it on a much lower budget. When I started, I would have never envisioned myself in the gold market. But once I decided, I wanted the best dealer/consultant I could find. She wouldn't buy anything for me that she wouldn't buy for herself. That's what you want in a dealer of any series.

Very nice set! It is so nice to collect and have an enjoyable experience as you are having.

Sorry but I just don’t see the fun in coin collecting when a place calls you up every time and says write us a check for $xx,xxx we have something for you. Where’s your thrill of the hunt, or desire to walk a bourse floor to find coins yourself, or browse through coins at lot viewings, etc? It’s one thing if you’re having a difficult time locating 1 or 2 specific coins in specific grades to have them assist, but it’s another to basically sit back and have them “collect” and then sell you your entire collection.

  • 1madman1madman Posts: 1,635 ✭✭✭✭✭

I can just imagine the stories I’d tell the grandkids or coin collecting friends on how I acquired each coin in my collection….

I got this $20 saint by answering the phone on April 15, 2016 when legend called.
I got this $5 Indian by answering the phone on September 22, 2022 when legend called.
    Etc, etc, etc

    Quite riveting

  • tradedollarnuttradedollarnut Posts: 20,244 ✭✭✭✭✭

Pffft. The thrill of the hunt is in the research and scouring the web and auctions and dealer websites and then asking your rep to screen what you find. Or buying an entire collection just to get the cream to add to your coins. Along with the awesome occasional phone call stating “guess what just walked up to the table”?! You obviously have never worked with a dealer to build a set. It can be quite rewarding emotionally and financially.

    That 1849 is friggen amazing

I'd imagine the joy of ownership in the featured coins within this thread might be a thrill in and of itself.

Haven’t looked but I’d wager you had to pay 65+ price guide for that coin (if that guide even exists). A collector might be equipped to know when that’s necessary but it can be a very expensive proposition when you miss something on the coin. I always said I knew quality and prices inside and out but needed a dealer to screen out the very subtle things like expert doctoring - and yes a lot of the old holders do have that as an issue.
