Yep. And she can find off-market coins that no one else can find.

Haven’t looked but I’d wager you had to pay 65+ price guide for that coin (if that guide even exists). A collector might be equipped to know when that’s necessary but it can be a very expensive proposition when you miss something on the coin. I always said I knew quality and prices inside and out but needed a dealer to screen out the very subtle things like expert doctoring - and yes a lot of the old holders do have that as an issue.

Actually, I didn't. As you know she is a great dealer for collectors

Pffft. The thrill of the hunt is in the research and scouring the web and auctions and dealer websites and then asking your rep to screen what you find. Or buying an entire collection just to get the cream to add to your coins. Along with the awesome occasional phone call stating “guess what just walked up to the table”?! You obviously have never worked with a dealer to build a set. It can be quite rewarding emotionally and financially.

    That 1849 is friggen amazing

I agree for the most part. I am essentially a do it myself collector. But occasionally I see dealer offerings that I find interesting to add to my collection. Laura and George has come through very nicely over the years. Laura even once told me that a coin I inquired about would not make me happy as I was too picky. This was not a criticism but just a valid opinion. I AM picky.

I do not often ask dealers with a want list. I am afraid that by doing so would make it more difficult to find the coin on my own.

Oh yes, that 1849 $10 does look amazing. Too bad I do not pursue $10 gold often.

Legend is awesome in my book, they let me send in CAC stickers using their dealer number.

I just wish I could afford some of the beautiful stuff that they have.

On my budget, they don't take my calls.

If you show an interest in any of my $20 gold generics I'll call you.

Yes. It's under earlyAurum. Not all my coins are there but most are.

Sorry but I just don’t see the fun in coin collecting when a place calls you up every time and says write us a check for $xx,xxx we have something for you.

These people last about 5 minutes.
    Over graded stuff.
    Often plastic/sticker collectors.
Kinda funny & depressing at the same time.

You realize that Doug has been on here for 23 years and collecting longer than that?

@DMWJR . Congrats on having such a magnificent collection. I too know very little about gold but that doesn't mean i can't recognize beauty. I too would use the approach you have used. Sometimes it is far better to know our limitations than our strengths. In truth, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I were trying to build such a collection using my wits and experience alone.
Looking at your coins, it is like each coin is worthy of being the Rock Star, cornerstone of any coin collection. As a group they are almost overwhelming. As far as the discussion about how a set should be built. I look at it like screw drivers. There are at least 30 different screw drivers in my tool box and I know what about 6 of them are for. There are at least 30 different ways to build a collection but you are better off knowing someone who knows how to use the tools is in charge.
Thank you for posting and taking the time to share. Good luck with all things in the future. James

I think it is human nature to assume others see preferences the same way. While I wouldn’t choose to delegate my collecting pursuits to a dealer, I respect the passion and pride expressed by the OP about his wonderful and impressive collection. Bravo!

One last thought before I step out of this thread. I have build many registry sets on my own and that is fulfilling too. I'm still doing it. But, this is different. Would you buy a multi-million dollar house without an agent, home inspector and appraiser? It's a little different that the other sets I work on - Lincolns, FE's, even Feutchwangers by variety

No dealer involvement here, but I have a lot of experience with Lincolns:

I’ve come to rely on a respected dealer for anything over four figures and sometimes less. It’s about finding the best coins for the money. If I could travel frequently to large shows and preview auction lots in person, I might do more myself but would still rely on trusted dealers in order to cast a larger net. Why would I not?
