Bought my First Cameo Proof Yesterday.

For some unexplainable reason, I was drawn to this pretty little Three Cent Nickel piece. Dipping my foot into a new pool of cameo proof coinage.

Nice coin. I too only have one 19th century proof. It too is a 3c Nickel.

Congratulations! Most important, the coin is beautiful!

Of interest, but less important, is the following, that I learned about a decade ago:

For PCGS Registry point purposes, Proof CAM coins often provide amazing value:

    1. A CAM suffix typically adds 1 full grade to the point score. For example, a PR65CAM will almost always have the same point score as a PR66, yet the PR65CAM will likely cost less than a PR66. This value is even wider at the PR66CAM level vs. PR67!
    2. Most PCGS Type Sets allow you to use Mint State coins or Proof coins for each slot. The above point is typically even better when using a PR65CAM vs. a MS66 - same number of registry points as each other, but the PR65CAM is often less expensive for many Type coins and dates than a MS66. Even more so when comparing prices of PR66CAM to MS67. Again, same number of Registry points to each side of the pair!
    3. As a bonus, not only is a PR65CAM often less expensive than the same point value MS66, but in my opinion, the Proof coin often has much greater eye appeal than its MS counterpart, due to its often flashy mirrors and stronger strike!

If you click on the hotlink in my auto signature below to my #2 ranked Dansco 7070 set (ranked behind #1 D.L. Hansen of course), you’ll see my set has ten Proof CAM’s. I believe in every one of those cases, that coin is less costly than the same Registry point MS counterpart one whole grade higher (and as noted, in my opinion, my proof CAM, with its highly lustrous mirrors and stronger strike, has nicer eye appeal than its MS counterpart one grade higher).
