I’d suggested a thread specifically for new purchases a few days back in the “Better World Forum” thread. Would love to see what everyone is adding, especially since there are so many different types from so many eras in all different parts of the world being collected amongst forum members.
Here’s my most recent addition. Not even a coin but it’s my latest pickup…..and let’s get things started here 
. Not gonna lie, I lobbed a low bid on this one on HA just to bookmark the result more easily. Did not expect to win it, but happy to add it to my stash of esoteric toners.

As presented in another topic took me 5 years to locate this date so happy to have it in hand. As mentioned the image is weird the hologram has zero damage (I was pleased to see than once in hand).

Congrats on this pickup! One thing Ive learned so far hanging out over here in the dark side with you guys is that rarity takes on a whole new level over here vs the US stuff I’ve grown up on.

Thanks!!! Patience is key with Latin American coins that are rarer. Unlike US coins it is mostly a question of having the funds. Even if you have the funds in Latin American collecting you have no other choice but to wait and that could be years, decades or simply never. Another you will learn you can buy almost any coin even if not super rich as long as the grade does not bother you. Unlike with US coins only the super rich get to enjoy the very rare coins. Maybe that will change one day with Mexican coins but hopefully not to soon so we can enjoy collecting what we like and want.
For example OK it is expensive for most people including myself but one can buy the 1732 milled 8 reales for 10k-20k depending in eye appeal versus the US 1794 dollar you would have to dish out 100 000$ or more. Many coins I have purchased that only cost 100$-300$ would be impossible for me to buy if they were US coins (they would cost so much more making most impossible to buy on a lower budget). Small time collectors like myself can truly enjoy collecting and it is great!!!
Also unlike US coins there are so few dealers (except a few online like say World Numismatics LLC). You have to put in the work to learn and to find your coins yourself. And that can mean daily searching for years in some cases and sometimes as mentioned before you simply will never cross a coin you want. You have to be OK to just be happy with what you can add and not get upset on the coins you simply never see come up for sale even if you could afford them (money is not everything as mentioned above....timing is).
I thank my OCD for landing many of the Latin American coins I own because it makes me look for coins daily and many days multiple searches per day. OCD sucks put it has its benefits in some cases like in collecting.

Here is one I added in May 2025. Yonaka says only 208 were minted (some say here that is not correct and maybe 2000 or so were minted guess we will never truly know for sure). There are no known examples of the first year 1751 and every date after 1752 the mintages are 37 000 up to 271 000 coins per year. Yonak'a book shows 2 different types mine been the rarer the other still very rare is the 1752 over 1. He has seen less than 10 of both types combined.
Imagine buying a US coin that has a mintage of only 208 pieces for a little over 300$ (the cost of my 1752 at auction). Never gonna happen you would have to pay a fortune.

I also added the very date in the same sale were the 1752 Peru 2 reales was in. The rarest dates of this series are 1752-1766-1767-1768 and 1769. Yonaka has seen only 3 examples of this date. I am sure more than 3 exist but it gives you an idea of the rarity. I believe he accumulated date over more than 10 years. To give you an idea this one cost a little less than 300$.

I do not have a big budget but I sure can enjoy collecting Latin American coins. But I learned fast to focus on a few series and not be all over the place....that I cannot afford on my type of income. I made a few mistakes early on buying this or that but learned fast enough to get my goals in order and stick with them. Now I only collect early milled 1 reales and recently added a new series Peru 2 reales. I added a new series because it is becoming so hard to add any new coins in the 1 reales set I have been doing from Peru.
A large number of coins from Latin America (early milled type) have holes it was a cultural thing and how they transported coins on ropes and sowed into clothing as not to lose them (I would imagine walking in the jungle). This was not done to damage coins but as needed not to lose them.

A couple of things I bought at the Mexico City coin convention last week. These will be for sale at the Latin American Coin Show in NYC in October.
A set of 18 Venezuelan silver medals "The Chieftains of Venezuela," each 9g of pure silver in a maroon velvet case.
A couple of them have been wiped and have some hairlines, but overall a handsome set. Must be scarce.
A Mexican silver medal (not Mexican Mint) for the July 11, 1991 eclipse in a lucite holder with information folder.
Engraved by Lorenzo Rafael for UNAM. 100g of pure silver. 60mm.
A Portuguese bronze medal that I found attractive. Looks to be part of a series.
I bought more, but that's it for now.

I read someone on the US forum describe themselves as a “squirrel collector”……basically, he “sees something shiny and goes after it with no plan whatsoever”.
This is a perfect description of me with dark side material at the moment. I’ve spent so much time on my 7070 set, it’s great to step outside of the “rules” of set collecting to snag a few things that catch my fancy here and there.
I was underbidder on the coin I really wanted from last nights HA Brazilian auction. This is a nice consolation prize though. Nothing crazy exceptional, just a pleasing example of the type.
NGC AU 58
One that I got recently is this PCGS-slabbed Napoleon as First Consul. He was First Consul from 1799 to 1804, at which time he orchestrated a coup d'état and declared himself Emperor. Note too the date, An 12, which refers to the 12th year on the Revolutionary Calendar, spanning 24 Sep 1803 to 22 Sep 1804 on our Gregorian calendar.

I haven't bought anything South Africa related in a long time of any significance, but lot 24042 of the Gatsby collection was cheap enough. It's a three-coin lot of KGV 1/2D. I was interested in the 1928 which is the key date of the entire denomination from 1923-1960. It's MS-64 BN.
To indicate the extent of the price collapse from the bubble peak (roughly YE 2011 or early 2012), I bought it at roughly a 93% discount (prorating the lot) from an earlier sale, both in the Heritage archives. Population count has increased noticeably proportionately but is still fairly low, in a market with a clear collector TPG preference who submitted all kinds of junk (in volume) for grading.

They are really rare.
1914 Revolutionary Peso (Guerrero). Zapatistas couldn’t separate gold from silver so they just went with the 30% gold alloy they had. I like the history….and the original skin.
