Just landed a nice clean Unc. 1920-S...which is 90% of the set complete...and it only took 30+ years!

Congratulations! This set in MS is a beast of an accomplishment. Even with your access to coins, it does not surprise me that it has taken three decades plus to get where you are. Here is my only MS WLH, if I recall correctly-

Completing a full MS or near MS walking liberty set is certainly a marathon and not a sprint. Took me about 15 years.

Where can we view your set? Is it PCGS only?

Here’s my PCGS MS 64 1920-D. I’ve always said this issue is a real sleeper. I had purchased some walkers in 2005 but professional and personal obligations caused me to pause until around late 2009. That’s when I’d made up my mind that I was going to complete the set, come hell or high water. I was a bit younger and more ambitious and motivated back then. I saw this Coin on a dealer website for $5000 and I jumped on it. It seemed like a lot of money back then but one sold recently for $13,200 and it’s not even as nice. Even adjusted for inflation that’s pretty good. This one has a great strike and originality. I had a top Walker guy tell me that he liked it better than his OGH gem 65, which made me feel really good. 😊

Congratulations on the progress on your set!

The 20S is a sore spot for me, years ago I came across one in a PC 64 holder with some nice rim tone. It was on consignment and priced right but was at the time a “big” coin for my budget. I went to confer with a dealer friend on it, who said jump on it, based on my description. Of course when I got back ready to step up and write the check, it was out of the case and another dealer was himming and hawing over it. The original dealer saw me and asked what I thought, I said I want to buy it. He told the other dealer to pass or play as he had a buyer, and of the other dealer said he was taking it……anyway,
Speaking of gem coins in old holders from collecting 30+ years ago, this was how they came back then!

The 1920-S is also VERY tough!! I have a 62 (the only one in my set). It was one of my first walkers from back in 2005. I bought it from a dealer on eBay. The pictures were terrible, but I took a chance, because I could clearly see a full split thumb, which is very unusual for the issue. I’m not going to post images, because my photography skills are terrible and I don’t have professional images. I meant to send it in for re-grade, but never did. I paid a grand for it but it retails for about $2250, now. If I get into a three holder, it will be worth an additional two thousand.

This is one of my Walkers. I posted this picture in another thread about half dollars in general, but thought it would be worth posting it again to this thread in case someone on this thread missed the other thread. It is without a doubt the prettiest Walker I own -- much more vivid toning colors in hand than its TrueView picture -- and one of the prettiest coins I own of any series.

Congratulations @RichR on your set now being 90 percent complete. I have 40 different dates/mintmarks, so I'm two-thirds of the way there.

Wow, what an accomplishment, RichR! I had a BU set from 37 thru 47 at one time and AU for the 30's but that was as good as I got. I know how hard it is to even find them, much less afford them. Congrats. I still have one complete set in an old National Coin Album, but it is not top end. lol
Here are a couple I was fortunate to purchase raw from Greg @Walkerguy21D and had graded. Very fortunate that Greg is a great guy and helpful.

I love the walking half dollar. I have a full raw set, just started on a certified set about 3 years ago. Being a low budget collector, I'm aiming to eventually get VG8 or better for all the expensive ones. I'm, currently at 86% complete.

@sedulous the 37 D is actually rarer in mint state than the 38-D, although the 38D gets more attention due to its having the third lowest mintage in the series.

I had a PCGS MS64 1920-D back in the 1990's. It was the real McCoy and, to this date, the only MS example I've handled in my career.

I sold my Walkers in 2016. Still the first coins I look at when I get a catalog from Heritage or Stacks. Here is my old 20-S which at some point later became a 65+:

@Walkerfan, Thanks for your comments... out of that previous post, I decided to send that '37-D in for grading. After "excizing" it from the Capital Plastics set, (the one shown in the picture previously)... I got it back and here is the result:
