This is a tough date. CAC shows 20 for this date, but only 3 have crossed Heritage, StacksBowers and Great Collections. The date is difficult to find with nice color. The surfaces usually have an issue. I was happy to find one with an original look. CAC seems to care more about color than surfaces.

Here is my lone Charlotte gold, and an honest coin IMHO:

    Love that Milled British (1830-1960)

I’m going to have to take a better picture of this one, I accidently made the lighting too diffuse, but here’s my favorite $5 Liberty Gold piece

    Very attractive and desirable Charlotte!

An 1842-C, stuck at the FIRST Charlotte Mint. Few people know that there were two Charlotte Mint building. The first one, which had two stories above the basement, like the Dahlonega Mint, was burned when a person who burgled the Director’s residence in the building, set it on fire to cover his tracks. The SECOND Charlotte Mint had only one story above the basement. It was done as a cost cutting move probably to make its replacement more politically palatable.

The 1839 half eagles had the mint mark on the obverse.

Love the obverse mint marks of the Southern Gold! So sought after! Great Coins!

I'm not familiar with the market for $5 Half-Eagles and the series for that matter, but I have a few questions:

Somewhere on these forums -- not sure where, I can't find the thread :/ -- but someone mentioned owning a few (3) Half Eagles purchased when gold was about $1,700 ($425 of gold per coin). A few of my friends also bought some about that same time (~5 years ago).

I don't know what Year or what Certified Grade the coins were by some here and my numismatic contacts.....but their purchase price was about $800 or about a 100% premium to gold bullion.

Now...with gold having DOUBLED....the coins are still priced in the $800's range....so the price was FLAT.

Is that correct for the most part with this series ? Or is it only germane to a particular (common) year and/or condition rarity grade ?

    Hi GoldFinger,

This is a very interesting question! I know that in May of 2022 the price of gold was in the mid 1800's range. If someone were to buy a common MS-60 coin back then the price was somewhere in the $800 area and now its maybe $900. These are trends prices, so they can be used only as a yardstick. But they are not extremely inaccurate. Auction price comparison would be more precise.

Someone would have made more money buying a VF-30 for about $100 cheaper. Now it is not worth much less than a MS-60.

Many rarer dates and coin of condition rarity have fared much better. That wouldn't be a big surprise.

This 1868-S has earned the top grade for this issue at PCGS, with a CAC to boot! The 1868 is very elusive as well, close to mint state. These are beautiful very rare coins!

That was me. They were common date decent looking Philadelphia half eagles from the 1840’s and 1850’s in NGC and PCGS 55 holders purchased 8-10 years ago. Last I checked a few months ago I can probably sell them for around $900 to $1000. There’s very little premium.

Sorry to hear that! I know that much of your holding though is in scarce and rare dates of high quality!
