Found in a box from 1990-- Old 108- series rattler

I just found this under a row of wheat cent rolls I collected from circulation and put away in 1990.
Can someone help with the current value of these 108- certification rattlers. I have read some of the old threads and realize this is not the rare white label 1080- or 1081- series, as this has a light blue label. The coin is an MS63 by today's grading standards, and I am wondering if it needs to have a gold CAC sticker to enhance its value? Thanks for your help!

Nice coin but a CAC green isn't even a sure thing even though I agree its undegraded by todays standards. Mottled appearance of white spots (PVC?) and (what appears to be) near terminal toning spots lower the the Eye appeal to neutral which effects the quality score combine with what from the photo looks like Avg luster which isn't enough to pull it up. It isn't just the lack of hits that accounts for the premium under graded status needed for a gold sticker.

I would immediately send that coin to greatcollections, have them send to cac for a sticker possibility, and auction it. Stuff like this could bring insane money at auction. I don’t understand it, but to each their own.
An MS65 shows a value of $275…..so probably not too insane. Then again, I’d buy the holder here…and not the coin.😉
Cool find, I wonder how many more early rattlers are out there to be discovered.
The coin is lustrous and much nicer than my phone picture makes it look ..... My question was about the 108XXX slab and what value it adds, and the cac gold comment was probably irrelevant as I value the coin at $135

I agree, if it could get a gold CAC, they seem to add $300-500 premium for the sticker
Great find, @CommemDude - here are my thoughts:
I would do one of two things - sell it to me or send it to CAC.

Send it to GC. No questions asked.

It’s around a $1k slab in today’s market.
Here is one recent eBay comp and GC is in a similar range.

Gold CAC stickers add widely varying premiums. And those premiums depend largely upon the values of the particular coin at the next grade and next two grades higher than the current one. So, for especially high value coins, the premium can be thousands of dollars.

So the suggestion of sending to GC and letting them decide to send to CAC or not seems like the best idea. A gold sticker would help while a green CAC or no sticker probably does not make as much of a difference.
Interesting that it's a gen 1.2 holder with a 108- serial number. Maybe an old re-holder or did these start at 108- and move on?
I'm sure it has some premium for the cert number.
Collector, occasional seller
They started at 108 and kept moving on. After the 108s, the order is considered to be more random.
Let me reiterate. A Lexington rattler with a green CAC is a scarce commodity. I recently sold a non-108 Lexington rattler in MS62 with a green sticker for over $500. There are several guys with commem rattler sets missing this coin/holder combination.

crack it, dip and submit to ANACS

My Lexington rattler before and after the trip to NJ:

That’s fair but I think the 108 premium trumps the Lexington rattler green CAC premium (meaning I think a non stickered 108 would sell for more than a green sticker Lexington rattler that is not 108).
I wonder if PCGS could estimate the number remaining based on number graded and crackout inserts returned. They probably could, but likey won't want to spend the time or money in order to do so.
I’d call it about even. Hopefully, the OP will get a green sticker and have the best of both worlds.
Tim
I remember when they were offering I think 50c per insert, but even then I doubt they got more than 25% returned, if that. It was probably only worth it for large dealers. Just a guess though.
LOL
Think a lot of this post misses the point of the post.
Think you would have to reach out to @oreville or @Lakesammman
Confirm it is the right label type that corresponds to the 108XXX if it is.. The Holder is collectible and brings over 1k with regularity as long as the label matches the serial number.
Nice find
It’s no longer just the white label (gen 1) but now all 108s that bring a premium. The original gen 1 108s that used to be $1k slabs are now $7k-$10k slabs. The gen 2s which used to have little to no premium, are now $1k slabs.
Nice find! I would get it gold CAC'd.
That makes it sounds so much easier than it is.😉

That is accurate. Having to fill out the CAC submission form without my reading glasses is quite the chore.

Well, yes, that’s precisely what I was thinking of when I posted.😉😉

Easier to fill out though with an Whiskey Sour next to me.

I don’t think it would help me fill out a submission invoice but I prefer these sours
