ANA Show Report

goldengolden Posts: 9,998 ✭✭✭✭✭

This was my 55th consecutive (1970-2025) ANA show.

I left home on Monday morning at dark thirty to go to the airport. I took a flight to DFW where I changed planes to OKC. When I arrived at OKC I got my bag and took a free shuttle to the rental car counter. I soon had my car. Since it was only 10 AM. I decided to do some sightseeing. I drove south on I-35 for an hour to Chickasaw National Recreation Area. It was a very nice area with a lake, creeks, springs, small waterfalls and great scenery. Even though it was hot, I enjoyed the trip.

In mid-afternoon I returned to OKC and checked into my hotel. Around 5 PM I went to dinner at Trapper's Fishcamp & Grill. I had the trout over dirty rice. It was horrible! It was the second worst meal that I have ever had in a restaurant anywhere.!

I started Tuesday morning off right with a Road Runner Cartoon. After a light breakfast at the hotel, I drove to the convention center ($10) garage and then walked across the skywalk to the Convention Center. I was pre-registered and already had my badge. I had about an hour and a half wait before the show opened. I found a seat and sat down. I had a very nice conversation with a collector from Houston while I waited. There was a large crowd waiting to go in at the 12:30 opening for ANA members. I first went to the Great Collections booth to drop off 3 coins for auction. I next started a tour of the bourse in the Ultra Premium section. At the table of Eye Appealing Coins, I saw an 1804 Half Cent in PCGS AU-58+ with a CAC sticker. After a brief discussion I made the purchase. Continuing on I saw an 1838-O Half Dollar in PCGS PF-50, a complete 1877 Proof set including the gold in PCGS holders, the 1844-O $5 in PCGS PF-67 Cam and the 1844-O $10 in PCGS PF-65 Cam, at Stack's table I saw the newly discovered 1804 $1 in PCGS PF-65 CAC and also viewed the coins from the James A. Stack, Sr. collection.

I had a nice conversation with Allen Mincho from Heritage. After a couple of hours, I came to Kenneth Goldman's table. He had a nice 1800 Half Dime in NGC 55. I have been looking for one in a PCGS holder for several years. We discussed it for a while. I decided to think about it until tomorrow.

I left the show at 4:30. I had dinner at Cracker Barrel. I had the lemon pepper trout. It was very good as always.

I got to the show on Wednesday a few minutes before the 9:30 opening. I continued my hunt around the bourse. David Kahn had an 1800 Half Dime in PCGS AU-53 with a CAC sticker. I did not like it as much as the one that I saw yesterday. I talked to Deplorable Dan from Peak Rarities about the upcoming auction of the Pioneer gold coins from the James A. Stack collection.

I went back to see Kenneth Goldman. I looked at the Half Dime again. After further discussion, I made the purchase. He is going to send it in to PCGS for me. We are going to try to cross it at grade. Fingers crossed. We will see.

I left the show and went to Golden Corral for dinner. It was good.

I arrived at the show on Thursday a little after 9:30. I went to look at the exhibits. I thought that the exhibits were better than they have been in several years. I next went to see Messydesk ( John ) to drop off 3 coins to image. I had a conservation with John Brush about the location of the 2028 ANA show. I saw a 1904 $20 in PCGS 63 that had proof-like surfaces. It was in an older holder and was not labeled as PL. I really did not need it. It was priced at $3250. I went back to pick up my coins from John. I looked at the $20 again. I decided to pass. I also saw a 1907 High Relief $20 in PCGS SP-63. You could tell that in was something special from several feet away. It was priced at $52,000.

There were several concessions stands on the bourse floor and in the lobby. They had chicken tender baskets for $12, cheeseburgers for $8 and sodas for $4. That is certainty better than prices in Chicago.

I heard several dealers say that they had a great show. I asked my favorite dealer what grade he would give the show. He said " A solid A ".

At 3:00 PM I attended the ANA awards celebration. They put out a nice small buffet. When it was over at 4:30 I left the show. I had dinner at Cracker Barrel again and had the trout again.

On Friday morning after breakfast at the hotel I drove the car back to the rental counter. I then caught the free shuttle to the airport. I had a long wait for my flight. The plane to DFW was 30 minutes late leaving OKC. I only had an hour to change planes at DFW. The plane made up 5 minutes in the air. When I got off the plane I started running to the gate. I am too old for that. When I got to the gate, they had already loaded 2/3 of the plane. Ten minutes after I got on the plane they closed the door. That was too close. I arrived home at midnight.

I enjoyed this ANA show more than any in recent memory. I am very much looking forward to next year in Pittsburgh!

Ditto on thanks! Isn't the next one in Savannah, GA?

Edit - ah, I see Savannah as spring vs summer in Pittsburgh. If you come to Savannah, I've got to meet you!

Great report, thank you for posting it. Any details on the 1838-O half dollar in PCGS PR-50?

The City of Champions for the next Summer's ANA, is just wonderful. Too bad it's not in the late spring; perfect time to go catch and grill some fresh trout. RGDS!

What did you mean by “dirty” rice?

Dirty rice is a traditional Louisiana Creole dish made from white rice which gets a "dirty" color from being cooked with small pieces of pork, beef or chicken, green bell pepper, celery, and onion,[1] and spiced with cayenne and black pepper.[2] Parsley and chopped green onions are common garnishes. Dirty rice is most common in the Creole regions of southern Louisiana; however, it can also be found in other areas of the American South and referenced as "chicken and rice," "Cajun rice," or "rice dressing".

Very good report. I see you eat at some of the same places I do when I am traveling alone. Cracker Barrel is reliable, if not as much fun now that I have to find healthier things on the menu.

Congratulations on 55 straight. Can't be too many people ahead of you on the list of streaks.

Great report @golden ! 55 consecutive ANA shows ... WOW!! I went to my first in Seattle, 1990, and have missed a whole bunch of them in between! By my calculations, that was your 10th of this run!! :o

Fingers crossed on your 1800 Half Dime. I didn't see it, but will hope you have some pictures to post of her in a lovely new dinner jacket soon.

  • I personally enjoyed the OKC location. What it loses in direct flights, it makes up for in being in the direct center of the country. It was nice being in a clean, safe, and friendly location.

I keep hearing that it was 100 degrees outside, but all I remember is that the buildings were so cold, that the outside air condensed on my skin every time I stepped outside to warm up. It never felt hot to me. Even with a few lightning storms, I hardly noticed the weather.

The Omni had excellent room service, which I was grateful for due to the typical lack of healthy food options on the bourse. I wasn't a fan of the automated packaged food sales in the convention center...to the point I almost stole a banana from @SullivanNumismatics.

My favorite exhibit of the show was the @APMEX display, picking up the 400 ounce gold bar. I confess to going back several times. This never would have happened in Chicago or Pittsburgh. The advantage of a rotating location is the ability to bring in new people and exhibits. I realize this clashes with the economic interests of the top 1% dealers who prefer "easy to get to from NYC." The 1804 dollar at Stacks and the ANA exhibit were cool too, but nothing compares to gripping a million dollars of gold like a barbell.

There were several impressive coins for sale on the bourse, but I couldn't pull the trigger until the auctions shake out. There seems to be a dwindling supply of top coins, which isn't yet fully reflected in the prices. Most dealers reported strong sales and traffic. The ones who didn't might be operating in areas where supply is drying up.

Overall it was a quick, efficient and fun show.

I agree. It was my first time in OKC, and frankly, I had low expectations. But as you say, it is a clean, safe city. with light traffic on the streets. Probably an easy place to live for those seeking that type of environment.
