Inspired by a recent thread and a lifelong desire to own one... which Fugio Cent would you prefer: a higher graded Restrike showing all the details for the Type, or an Original Fugio in a lower grade realizing that many lacked full strikes on questionable planchets?

Collecting: Dansco 7070; Middle Date Large Cents (VF-AU); Box of 20;

Successful BST transactions with: SilverEagles92; Ahrensdad; Smitty; GregHansen; Lablade; Mercury10c; copperflopper; whatsup; KISHU1; scrapman1077, crispy, canadanz, smallchange, robkool, Mission16, ranshdow, ibzman350, Fallguy, Collectorcoins, SurfinxHI, jwitten, Walkerguy21D, dsessom.

    If you buy a Restrike, you still won't have a Fugio.

    I'll never afford one but still my opinion.

    Preference is original. Not saying I’d never buy a restrike, or bashing them at all. It side by side for the same price, I’d go original.

    *addition to comment - I’d have to buy the book on the restrikes before buying one because I really don’t know the deal with them.

    If this poll was public I'd be borderline shocked if anyone voted for the second option.

    I like to look at the nice high grade originals in well done photos as they are out of my reach with all the other things that I want first. But a nice nice MS63BN would be awesome, perhaps it can go at the bottom of my bucket list.

    Like many I started 6 decades ago with small cents and continued those and worked up in denomination. Should have thought more about early American history.

    Thanks everyone... I think The Forum has spoken!

    Seriously, I'll likely go for an original... but I'm trolling down into the VG to F grades (~$1000 to $1500 range) and some of them look pretty rough. I just noticed New Haven Restrikes in AU to MS grades going for the same price range but I wasn't sure of the collector base for the Restrike... not casting aspersions, but as others have already said... it's not a Fugio... thanks all.

    Personally, I would like both to compare. But, if I could only get one... It would be the Original.

    I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

    Restrike defeats the point. Original all day long.

    To me, the charm in these coins is the history. Mine is one of my most expensive coins, worth it to me because of the history.

    The "restrike" does not check that box for me.

    YMMV

    The responses favoring originals are spot on. If you save up you should be able to land one of the bank hoard examples in mid MS grade for not too much, if you focus on the most common varieties, Since the planchets used were commonly flawed, you may find a very high grade with a not too objectionable flaw noted at a very good price.

    I think the planchet flaws in most cases add interest to the Fugio. Also if history is a strong consideration in your purchase I would suggest an F to AU grade over an MS. The MS likely came from the BNY hoard - the F to AU coin could have been in James Madison's pocket.
