Really old Population Report - Summer of 1990

Part of picking up and moving our lives after a couple of decades in the same place is consolidating all of the things we tend to accumulate.

I tried to do much of that before I moved last year, but there were a more than a few boxes I didn't really go through.

This year, as I have found places and spaces for many things, much of the clutter that has taken up part of the garage has been reduced, although there are still a half a dozen boxes that need to be went through.

.

It's been raining the last couple of days, and last night I found myself going through a box of momento's. Cards and letters and drawn pictures from my kids when they were little, things like that. It was a big heavy box and there were some items that left me scratching my head too. A small group of unread newspapers and even a manila folder with notes from a project walk back in the mid 1990's.

It was definitely a walk down memory lane.

And then I found a couple numismatic items that harkened back to even before all but my oldest was born.
.

I was given this at the Seattle ANA in 1990 at the PCGS table when I had engaged in conversation about their service, and while I remember having it for some years, I thought it may be lost to time. Thankfully, other than a few notes I made in the Mercury Dime and Walking Liberty sections somewhere along the way, it is about as pristine as it could be.

Interesting to note it only shows totals for the grades from 60 through 70. There are lots of other interesting tidbits in here, including the Foreign Coins graded at that point.

Kind of a fascinating look back to the early days of grading.
.

I think it was my friend @TomB that had asked if anyone had some of these older ones last year, but after looking where I thought it might have been, I figured mine was lost. Tom, if you read this post and need / want anything out of here, let me know.

It’s always cool seeing grade reports/pricing from back in the day.

I like looking at the 'modern' stuff to see what was submitted. I think I have seen earlier that look like dot matrix printed.

@davewesen Here's another couple pages of what would have still been considered pretty modern at the time, and certainly something very few people were grading (with the exception of early Proof issues). Also note the lack of FS designations for the Unc's and CAM and DCAM for the Proofs, which came later.

That is old @pursuitofliberty! The only one I saved is from 10 years later. Have an NGC from the same time period. If you or Tom want anything, just lmk.

What a trip with those numbers. As I was reading your post, @pursuitofliberty, I thought to myself "I have to send him a PM about imaging a few pages" and then you mentioned it at the bottom! You will no doubt get a PM soon with a request for only a few pages.

@Nic I have a couple from that time frame too somewhere around here. Not all of my library is unpacked yet. I stopped a month ago as I am putting in new carpet the week after the ANA for the office and bedrooms, and decided I would wait on those. I had to move everything OUT of the rooms and didn't want to pack and unpack twice.

@TomB I'll watch for it my friend. I probably know a least a few of the ones you want, but I'll see what you ask for ... don't be shy. It's here and it's not going anywhere.

There’s still only 1 17/3 in 64 graded by PCGS according to coin facts. There’s now 4 15/2 in 63.

I used to enjoy both the PCGS and NGC population figures late in the 1990s, if you had a better date/grade it was nice to know where you stood.

I had thought that average unc and proof grades had migrated from 63 to 64 over the last 35 years. Not so.

My earliest PCGS Population report is dated January 1,1988.

    Thanks for sharing.

It would be great if these were available online at NNS!
