I was reading about the Society of Medalists which ran from 1929-1985 due to a post by @keets. It mentioned that it was the successor to The Circle of Friends of the Medallion which ran from 1908-1915. Is TAMS, formed in 1960, the primary medal enthusiast organization now?

I haven't seen many of their medals but recently ran across this Circle of Friends (COF) medal in a Hayden auction.

The book "American Art Medals, 1909-1995 The Circle of Friends of the Medallion and the Society of Medalists" by David Alexander, published by the American Numismatic Society in 2010 covers and illustrates all of the medals and gives excellent background information. It is a must have book for anyone interested in these medals.

@Zoins... That is a beautiful medal... Is it yours or just a picture of one? Cheers, RickO

It was recently sold by Steve Hayden, but not to me. It’s the best looking specimen of the few I was able to find online.

  • I am looking for a couple of Circle of Friends of the Medallion medals. I am looking to exchange/buy Medal number 12 and number 7.
    I have Number 6 and Number 10. I also have Number 3.
Does anyone know of somebody that maybe interested in selling or exchanging these medals?

I have contacted Mr. Alexander to see if he has any duplicates of the ones you are interested in. Will let you know when I hear.

Exonumia seems to be a neglected area of Numismatics but pretty much every collector has medals of some type.. The resurgence of SC$ some 20-25 years ago really stimulated interest in medals and the book effort by Tom Hoffman et al was a result of that. Right now there doesn't seem to be any effort by any major issuer to do anything. Not to criticize the Mint, but they could/should do something instead of absconding our circulating coinage for tribute.

No word yet. His wife passed away recently and he is quite preoccupied, so I can’t press him on the matter.

  • I am sorry to hear of the passing of Mr Alexander’s wife.
