Three Day GTG Experiment - Coin Three Ends Late, 7-29, REVEALED 67CAM

Good luck, same rules as last time!

I thought it would be interesting to run a sort of experiment here with GTGs. Oftentimes posters will use GTGs to get an idea of if to resubmit a coin, or not to.

Here's my question - how accurate is the forum, grading from images alone? Over the years, I've built up a good chunk of coins with my own images that we can use for this purpose, given the consistent images and vast array of grades/services.

Here's how I plan to do it - one coin a week, after which the grades will be tallied and scored. Each correct answer will be 0 points, 1 point off is 1 point, 2 points off 2 points, etc. Missing designations counts as a point. Essentially, the fewer points at the end of the grade session the better. All coins for the moment will be CAC certified, so as to add another degree of accuracy in the actual grade. I will also choose coins I feel are properly graded.

I will upload the guesses into the below publicly accessible Google Sheet, so you all can view the data for yourselves.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1UYJAbLnHMsDWuv72Rj7AjlTbFLkctDOiw7rHwDq45ZU/edit?gid=0#gid=0

I'll let each coin run for roughly three days.

Coin #3 will end late due to circumstances beyond my control.

If this coin is graded like some of my proof Franklins it may only be a Brilliant Proof B)

If some of the streaks shown in the photo of the coin are on the coin my grade guess is PF65CAM. If the streaks are not on the coin and instead are on the holder my grade guess is PF67CAM.

Seeing as how some 1880 quarters display proof-like surfaces and the guess that followed yours was “MS”, is your guess Proof or MS?

I can’t tell what’s on the holder and what’s on the coin. In addition to that, even good images might not show hairlines that are present on many, if not most Proof coins. For example, based on the images provided if I were going to guess - which I’m not - I’d guess Proof 67 Cameo. However, for all we know, the coin could be graded 65 or 66 due to hairlines that aren’t apparent in the images.
For those reasons, I’m going to sit this one out. And now, I’ll get off of my soap box.😉

I will join the ever growing group of collectors and dealers who are protesting this GTG and will NOT be providing my guess.
Thanks Mark for the inspiration and for stepping forward in instigating this rebellion.

I wasn’t looking for or expecting any partners in protest.

That has always been the case with many or most or all Guess The Grades, which is often why I can't venture a reasonable guess.

With this situation having good photos and starting with 3 existing opinions in agreement (the TPG; CAC and the photographer) and mostly because it is an experiment about GTGs from photos, I am more motivated to offer a guess.

Even at that it is a guess about what the TPG gave it. My opinion of the grade might be different than the TPG if viewed in-person. Sometimes multiple grades could be offered: one each for the TPG grade; the market grade or my grade etc. I have one coin that has four different grade opinions. Two different raw auction appearance grades; a TPG grade; a CAC label that agrees with the TPG grade and then my grade that disagrees from all of them and falls in the middle.

It has always been an interpretation of photos because we are not able to examine the coin. It will be interesting to see what conclusions FlyingAl eventually draws from the experiment.

And now, I’ll get off of my soap bar. Oops, think I cracked the holder. ;)

    .
    .

My guess is Proof 67 Cameo for the TPG grade.

I do have a question if anyone knows. Is it typical to find Longacre doubling on a proof coin? Is it the norm? James

I see areas that make me question DCAM and others that make me question an Uber Grade.

Edit: This coin looks familiar not sure if it was one of your previous topics but maybe I should have added CAM or DCAM even though the obverse shield isn't completely filled in.

The reveal! Average grade was a 66+CAM, with a variation of +/- 2 points. Overall very well done.
