Here's what I'm getting.

1795 Flowing Hair Dollar (PCGS XF-45) – $15,000

1796 Draped Bust Quarter (PCGS/CAC VG10–F12) - $35,000

1813 Capped Head Half Eagle in AU-58 CAC - $20,000

I still have $30,000 to spend. Let's go out with a bang!

Here are the coins I would buy for my PCGS slabbed type set. They are outside of my current budget, but with $100,000 . . .
Liberty Cap Head Half Cent Facing Left (1793)
Flowing Hair Large Cent Chain Reverse (1793)
Flowing Hair Large Cent Wreath Reverse (1793)
    Flowing Hair Half Dime (1794-1795)
Draped Bust Half Dime Heraldic Eagle Reverse (1800-1805)
Draped Bust Dime Small Eagle (1796-1797)
Draped Bust Quarter Small Eagle Reverse (1796)
    Flowing Hair Half Dollar (1794-1795)

I would complete the Roman Twelve Caesars all in gold, including the short-lived emperors like Otho and Vitellius.

I have actually completed that set for about $10K, but with only two of the coins in gold.

Alternately, on the US side, I'd want an 1808 quarter eagle and an octagonal Pan-Pac. And a Stella.

I would deposit it in a nice balanced index fund and buy $200,000 in coins over the next 20 years and still have the $100,000.

Can't be that dollar specific but if I had that kind of money to spend I would build a 1801 to 1807 Draped Bust Half set nobody would ever forget. James

I'd buy a couple dozen double eagles at near melt in NGC/PCGS MS63 slabs. It would be a very liquid investment where I could easily sell a few coins if I ever needed to raise some cash.

A few months back CRO had a beautiful Higley copper for sale - gorgeous color and nearly without flaws - and it was in that range.
    It would be that.

I would probably get a early mint state $10 eagle.

I'm working on an 1890 mint set (18 coins total) that will have an 80k+ budget.

I know this question is not directed at me, but I have to share a trivia fact in one of my reference books:
In 1890, "Charles Dana Gibson, who became America's pre-eminent illustrator of women during the 1890's and early 1900's, created the Gibson Girl, who made her debut in LIFE magazine. Said to personify the ideal "American Girl", she sparked a national craze for illustrations of prettty women."
It ain't coin related but I am all in favor of pictures of pretty women. Good for you 1890! James

On my hit list are the following which need to be pcgs straight graded. Presently, I am taking my time obtaining these coins as they appear in my local market however if I had an extra $100,000 that the boss (wife) doesn't know about i just might accelerate my buying.
    -1795 flowing hair dollar
-$2.5 or higher denomination “C” gold coin
-$2.5 or higher denomination “D” gold coin
-$2.5 or higher denomination “CC” gold coin
    -1916DDO buffalo nickel
    -1911d weak D $2.5 gold Indian
    -1918/7 buffalo nickel
-any coin in a pcgs white holder
-any coin in a pcgs doily holder
    -1879cc Morgan ogh MS
    -1889cc Morgan ogh ms
    -1892cc Morgan ogh ms
    -1893cc Morgan ogh ms

1732 milled 8 reales Mexico authentic (PCGS or NGC) = 15k to 20k

Nothing else I really want (that cost so much) to be honest. The rest I would keep long term for home repairs (invest the money till that time would come).

If I was a US collector then 1794 dollar in low grade if that is even still possible. Or build an early US dime collection.

High grade (greater than or equal to 67+) Proof type.

@pcgsregistrycollector you posted good stuff here that you seemingly purchased or so I assumed, most are beaned, you did good, I am just unsure what you did with the 1795 $1. It says 45, I don't agree, looks 40 at best, this one is not beaned, but you wrote .5 dollar VF30-35 beaned, so what is it?

  • lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 8,547 ✭✭✭✭✭

With that kind of budget I'm finishing the Date Run and Major Varieties of US Cents with a nice 1793 Chain, 1793 Wreath, 1793 Liberty Cap, 1799, and 1804... with any money left over... 18th C Type... 1793 Liberty Cap Half Cent, 1795 Half Dollar, maybe 1796 Quarter... but I think I'd have already overspent my mythical budget.

...did I slobber too much on the pillow?

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

The question in my mind is whether the $100,000 is all you can spend on coins or is it additional funds?

The alternatives are owning a few high value coins or the challenge of a $100,00 date and mint mark set.

The first thing that comes to mind is a gold 1865 Philadelphia year set. The year is fascinating and also the 1865 $2.5 and $5 are very rare. Getting those would make this set possible.

An 1864 gold set is even cooler. I would love an 1864 $2 1/2 and an 1864-s $5. So few people have any of these 4 gold pieces.

    A 1796 25C and 50C would also be cool!

I'd go for a mint state 1846 half dime (only three out there), and would hope to have more than half the cash left to get some nice type coins or just keep working on nice examples for my half dime variety collection.
