1886-o Morgan dollar AU or Unc?

logger7logger7 Posts: 8,991 ✭✭✭✭✭

This Morgan dollar has cartwheel luster and graded AU58. Could this grade as MS60?

I would say low grade unc.

Strange lighting but I’d guess ms 63

If not details or played with, as I can't tell from these photos, I agree looks like a solid 63.

The lighting is really playing tricks on me... the reverse (eagle's breast and feather detail) looks Unc but I really can't tell about the obverse... there looks to be breaks in luster on the cheek but I really can't tell if it's wear without coin in hand...

    Unc 62 is my guess

Thanks, I'll have to get better lighting; I thought I was using a 75w led maybe the the cowl around the light messes with the look and color.

The 1886-O is a very tough coin to grade with this look. I don't see a 60 in the cards. It will likely grade 61 or 58. It is a close call... but TPG is usually very tough on this date. I like the coin and the look which is more important than the current plastic.

I see just a little too much friction in there to call it UNC, in my opinion. Seems like the AU58 grade is correct to me.

Tough to grade from photo and for a date that had average luster at best. Agree very nice coin no matter whether graded AU58 or MS61. Has a very good strike for the date. Also looks like too much chatter on both sides to be MS. A sticker on an AU58 would be nice.

I'd rather have an AU58 than an MS60. Give it the "white paper test". Stand the slab on edge on a white piece of paper and look down at the obverse. Chances are you'll see a gray area by the tip of the bust where the luster's been worn enough to disrupt the reflection.

@logger7 what do you think it grades? Does it look AU or BU?
    Is it in a rattler?
How about an image of the whole coin and slab if you have the time?
I believe that PCGS would be pretty tough when it comes to grading this date.

Tough images, the fields show the type of disturbance that usually equates to AU.

Slider but likely in an MS-something slab.

Seems to have luster breaks on the motto, stars, legend, wreath, and eagle wing tips, albeit small, but too much to be true MS and just due to some bagginess. Great looking AU58 and think our host got it right.

I would say AU-58 now with new pics

I did a light dip on the coin sent it in express, it recently graded MS62. I'll try to upgrade with newer pics when I get it back.
