I want to buy one of these but not sure I want to lay out the dollars for both,,,,,,, I am leaning towards the Gold Sacagawea Dollar.

    10,000 pcs for Superman
    7,500 pcs for Sacagawea

Superman has been more popular for longer. That’s my only reasoning. A guess, at best.

Superman is an American institution with a large fan base. I don't think this will change substantially when he becomes public domain in 2034, so there should always be some interest/demand.

As beautiful as the Sac coin is, I doesn't have broad appeal and will eventually become a bullion coin. If this were in high relief (and with purity/specs in the design), it might have retained a premium.

the premium over spot is means you'd have to find someone willing to pay $x over spot all the way up and over time

both have premiums, but the superman coin is large

anecdotal report has 1/10 and other small sized gold selling a lot better than the ounces. the superman is 1 ounce and the sac is 1/2

the other hand is the sac is an unexciting coin to even people in the hobby. superman is super and it is a mint product. the coin will have much better appeal than a sac.

I plan to buy the $100 high relief sunflower and bee instead.

By the time gold reaches $10K per ounce, both of them will be bullion coins.

They will likely both be bullion coins if gold is at $1500

Both very collectible. Both horrible investments unlikely to appreciate as much as a 1 oz gold bar.

At $1500 gold I think both coins would carry a premium. If initial buyers are willing to pay $2100+ per coin, the secondary market would likely support a price higher than $750 per coin.

Search "gold superman coin" on eBay and you will see multiple such coins from around the world going for small premiums. The US is late to the party and these offerings seem to have little crossover appeal.

    You lost me at “investment”.

I would 100% buy a slabbed pre-1933 gold piece instead of those.

You mean like the Spouse $10 gold?

Well, no. Back when gold was more affordable, many of the lower-mintage Spouses did command a premium, although usually a modest one. Superman has a much deeper fan base and crossover appeal. As for the gold Sacagawea, notice that the 2016 gold Merc, SLQ and Walker, along with the 2014 gold Kennedy, all carry significant premiums despite mintages of 70,000 to 125,000. The gold Sacagawea, even at a mintage much higher than 10,000, would certainly do likewise.

I can't with a good conscience click on either. I'll settle with both are terrible investments.

Well, I think I will try for the Superman coin. If I don't get one then I will try for the Sacagawea. I may buy both.

These I will be putting back for my grandson who is 2 1/2 yrs old. When he gets older and gold is at $10,000 per oz he should do OK.

People liked those vintage designs better, and since the Sac dollar never really caught on, I think it won't be very popular. But I may be wrong.

The future is the hardest thing to predict.

As a rule don't buy any coin for investment.

There are several possible scenarios where either or both of these coins can do exceedingly well but most such scenarios greatly favor something else to capitalize on it. I you like the coins buy them but if you like gold buy out of the money US gold or modern world gold in unc or proof.

I slightly favor the gold Sac.

I chose Sacagawea only because of the lower mintage, but you’d be hard pressed to resell these for anything more than melt to your local dealer. Both are bad options.

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

A long-term vestment from the Mint. with gold at an all-time high. Neither for me. Buy a nice early Bust or Seated coin.
    Whatever you decide, best wishes.

Yes, I have a lot of Mexican 50 peso gold coins from around 1947 -- nice and heavy (1.2 oz .900 fine I think). ;)

In that case, I would say more gold the better. Nice idea for the kiddos. The Superman 1 oz would be my choice. Plus I loved superman when I was his age.

Maybe something like this. Not the prettiest, and surely cleaned but at around $26 over spot, I’m pretty happy.
Probably will crack it for a pocket piece when I get it.
