1823 Large Cent Restrike: EBay "Denver Coins Co"

I made the mistake of asking the eBay seller a question prior to bidding, already knowing the answer. I wanted this coin to add to my unmolested example but was blocked by the seller. Too bad, my bid was a little over $1000.

So he didn't like the "tooled" designation and cracked it out- am I missing something?

Apparently. With all the fake stuff coming from China I would have thought the slab added value. In addition, over the decades I’ve seen a few of these coins modified to ‘improve’ the look of the edge so this tooling is almost another variety.

Unless it was a shill bid and didn't actually sell for $915.

I actually would have preferred it in the NGC details holder. Many of these have had the edges tooled to compensate for crumbling dies... I accept this as part of the "lore" of the Restrike...

I bet they’d be more upset about being exposed here for their tactics!

That doesn't tell me what the question was... but it's not that important

In one of the pictures I see this question: “Was this coin recently cracked out of a slab?”

The question could also have been: "Do you know if this coin has been altered in any way?"

Edit: Ah I see I missed the pic of the question in there.

Apparently, I missed something? I am well aware of the counterfeit environment now and I would guess if the seller is also aware and concerned it is a fake he wouldn't have risked cracking it out.

Must admit I did "miss" the notion tooling makes it "almost another variety"...

This seller has been exposed multiple times on Instagram coin community. a lot of the inventory is cracked out coins. Buyer beware. Joke of a seller. Good eye!

Successful transactions with: Jinx86, Flcardtrader, Robkool, JWP.

Good to know about this seller. The seller shows up in a banner many times on eBay, and I live near metro Denver. Never bought from this seller, the images seem off. I am glad to know my intuition is still working (well at least in this case).

Denver Coins up to their old trick I see. Buy details coins , crack em out and add words like 'Pristine" and + + +
