Should I get this graded?

Husband and I are clearing out a storage unit. There were a lot of coins. I don’t know much about coins. I wanted to get the community’s opinion on if it’s worth it or not to have them graded. We are not coin collectors. We were just going to let it go to auction on EBay but weren’t sure if it was worth getting graded before we list it. We plan on selling all of the coins. There are so many that I’m so overwhelmed and don’t know what to do with them. I took them to a coin shop and they wanted to buy several but I didn’t want to get ripped off especially because the employee knew I had no clue about them.

The grading fees and shipping costs would probably cost more than the coin is worth.

That is not worth getting graded. Coin looks cleaned too.

The coin looks counterfeit to me. But even if genuine, it definitely wouldn’t be worth the cost of grading.

Upon closer look I agree. The S looks weird.

"We plan on selling all of the coins. There are so many that I’m so overwhelmed and don’t know what to do with them."

    So many of what?

It looks like you posted several pics of the same coin above. How many more of those do you have? What other coins do you have that has overwhelmed you?

  • Be methodical and take good pictures of each coin's front and back.

STOP. First off always hold coins by the rims. Never clean or polish any coin. Do not put a fingerprint on them as in the long term that will likely damage the coin (oils/acids on your finger). Next, stop and take two breaths. Coins are not hard to understand, even 8 year olds can and do collect. So, get yourself a Red Book of US Coins, might be one in the unit already. Does not have to be a new guide and old one will likely be just fine. Cheap on ebay and amazon.
    Sort by denomination first.
    Then sort them by years.
Then by mintmarks (the red book will show you where to look, etc). Red book also has pics and explanations.
No need to be in a hurry as just one example can pay off for all the time learning. Knowledge is key here. And it does not take much research to figure it out.
Once you do the above you can check on completed ebay sales for the ones you have identified as maybe being worth more (again per looking at the red book). I'm not saying you'll be an expert anytime soon but put the time in and then you'll know if the coin shop was legit. He may have only wanted the older stuff and not the newer. Not saying the newer doesn't have value but it take the time to look and see.
post pics and show us them sorted. We will certainly help.
    Good luck!
    bob:)
PS: most auction buyers are thrilled to get a unit with coins. But, they've done the learning and know, generally, what is worth keeping and selling and what needs to go to the bank and deposited.

Buy a copy of "The Guide Book of United States Coins" better known as the Red Book. It will help you sort through the coins and give you an idea of retail values. Never let a dealer know you know nothing about the coins you want to sell and never appear overly anxious to sell.

Looks real to me. Is there anything specific that makes you think that it's a counterfeit? I've never seen a fake Morgan with that toning pattern.

Weigh it. If 26.7 grams, it is probably good. Still only worth some $25 or so to a coin shop.

The first picture of obverse instantly reminded me of the look of many Chinese counterfeits. But I agree about the toning pattern, which made me less than certain about the coin.

I would not incur the expense of having it graded.
Please post pictures of the other coins you have.
    Thanks.

I'm in the "genuine" camp but as I wrote earlier, would not submit it for grading. It is just another common date Morgan Dollar.
