Things seem to have really slowed on fleabay..............

Now with 8,000 sales and 6,000+ feedback I think I have a pretty good feel for sales on fleabay.

Something has changed in last month or two.
Selling same items there are lower final prices, fewer bids, less watchers and more unsold items.
Definately a general slowdown.

Maybe it is the economy, maybe its all the cram down measures from fleabay?

  • I received a call the other day from e-bay. Woman said, "I'd like to tell you about the new selling features..."

I cut her off, "Wow, business must REALLY be down if your resorting to phone calls to drum up business."

Then there was a very long pause on the other end of the line...

"Sorry, I'm off to a meeting, send me an e-mail," I told her.

Depends upon what you're selling and what you're buying.
  • When I just checked, there are over 126,000 listings in the US Coins category which is high for this category, considering there are no current promos going on. Maybe competition is such that bids are spread out. Just glancing through the listings, items are selling although they aren't my items.

Yeah Buddy! They brought it on themselves.

and more than twice as much OFF ! HA! image

With all their ridiculous changes etc, is it any wonder? image

Total listings are up, but interesting listings are down. I've been running over the last year with close to 100 items in my watch list at any given time (not that I'm planning on bidding on all of them, just watching some because I'm interested). I'm only watching 50 or so at the moment. Dunno why the difference.
  • My ebay sales have been dead for a few months. I sell a broad mix of collector coins; large cents, IHPs, barber, seated, a little Bust. Generally all start at .99 with no reserves. I used to make enough to make it worth the effort. Now I am about breaking even (or losing on occasion). I am in the process of shifting to other venues. It is a shame and I will miss ebay, even with all of its flaws. No one but themselves to blame.

Been a great buying time, stuff isn't going for as high as it was even this summer when it should have been slower.

I have been doing it for 10 years now, and even though I come out ahead most of the time, the prices for most general items is drifiting lower. I just adjusted my OTC buying prices to account for it. I used to be able to buy from other dealers at shows and list and sell with a profit, but lately, I can only make a profit on OTC purchases, unless I catch somebody snoozing!

    My Monday auctions were not.

Overall though, things have been great recently IMO.

  • I am having to hold off on selling coins now. My items have sold for pitiful amounts in the past month. Most of my items are cleaned coins going for $20 to a $150. High quality items are probably going for fairly solid figures, because quality normally is affected as much.

I'm hoping that sales will go well when the weather gets colder and more people are indoors.

the website itself is slow and annoying. The new feedback rules are ridiculous.

I'm seeing the same slow down and buyers are getting more and more picky.

Ship coins the next day....all the time, and get dinged for slow shipment. How much faster can you do it? They really rate the postal service not the seller.

E-Bay is not the venue it once was.

I plan on taking 3-4 weeks off of listing.

It just isn't making $$$ anymore!

i sold 220 ounces of silver on ebay the last few days and people were fighting over it. amazing prices were paid.

as for coins.. they cost too much to make money on them in my opinion. i cannot find deals on coins. what i see in my area in person
is crap. i do not know the whole spectrum of numismatics to pick
out the few winners among thousands of duds.

anything decent is marked at full retail. no deals to be had by local
    sellers/B&M.

I've stopped buying on eBay lately due to the large influx of Chinese counterfeits sellers. They are all over eBay and anytime you report the item you get a response that the coin is not in violation of eBay policies. I was looking at 16-D Mercs today and for every 2 genuine there was 1 counterfeit. All Chinese sellers, all shipping from China, prices less than 100 buy it now, some of the sellers had 50+ of them sold (dutch auctions) with positive feedback. They are clear fakes, but eBay allows them.

I thought this thread looked familiar! Yeah, 2005 or so is when I really got back into collecting. I remember getting some great deals off ebay as I was putting the second iteration of my 7070 Type Set together. I ended up selling off a lot of those coins in 2012... only to start buying again around 2019, just before the Pandemic. Sometimes, timing is everything...

Currently, I just finished my raw Braided Hair Large Cents with a couple of F+ to VF 1843s gotten from ebay. I also bought a 1840 small date XF40 CAC. The 1843s hammered for about 30-40% off of PCGS Priceguide, and the 1840 for ~25% off of PG value. I'm done with that particular set, but I'm still watching for what I collect. The problem is, there's so much $h!t on Ebay that sifting through it all is a real chore... and I still have a day job!!

That said, I've got coins on my watchlist that haven't seen movement in over 3 months... and the last coin for the particular set of Large Cents I just completed was not purchased from ebay. I got my 1839/6 from an EAC dealer... sure, there were several on ebay. In fact, I'd been watching a few of them for a while. I just got a much better deal from the EACer with a website... sure, it took longer to process, but there's a certain level of assurance in sending money to someone I've dealt with before...

Sorry for reviving this old thread. I think that the original thread was more about the market in 2008. It could have been written today, so again. appologies. Once you reply to something on this forum theres no going back. To the point of this thread: Ebay charges sellers extortionary fees. I think Great Collections (for graded MS and PR) coins and USACoinBook for raw coins are better places to sell (for less fees).

One major problem is that with the pandemic in the rear view mirror, coin collecting seems to be going the way of the postage stamp collecting world. Not enough new collectors are being minted (pun intended). I have nephews and nieces who dont want my collection. They have no interest at all. Coin collecting needs a few stories that people can relate to. There are just too many scams on eBay these days. And too many new coin designs. I cant keep up with it. Kids who have credit cards dont like change, and dont care about it. On the other hand, during the pandemic there was a new fad called "silver stacking", and "roll hunting". Those guys are the new guard.

Those of us seniors who grew up collecting coins may be stuck with a huge hoard that is going down in value. As a paperboy in the early 1960's, I literally had to "collect" coins to pay for the papers I delivered. I remember the thrill I got out of getting a Franklin half dollar in change. Most coins were clads, and anything with silver in it was for my collection. Those were the days. No internet, just sports, delivering papers, and making money taking care of old peoples lawns.

Ebay is extortion at less than 10% (with store) or 13% (no store) but GC isn't at 20+% (under $1000)??

I have only had 5 sales total on the bay this year so far (bought 24 lots over that same time, all BIN). Not worth the store fee there, though I admittedly have not been listing most of my inventory for a while.

As a regular purchaser on eBay, I have not noticed a slowdown. Perhaps there is a change in auctions, which I never participate in, but as for buy it now, all seems as it has been.

My sales on eBay have ground to a near halt over the last couple weeks. I’ve sold a couple things but haven’t even really received many offers. Except the ones at 50% or less than my listed prices.
Figure most of it is the summer slowdown coupled with market softening.
Was watching a few whatnot streams this weekend and lots of silver selling for under spot on that platform. Watched a couple MS69 ASE sell for $39.

What about the eBay live auctions that appear to be working for one seller. I just haven't been able to find a list of the coins coming up in those auctions so I can plan, get a time frame when to participate when a coin I have had time to view. The seller makes a number of videos of coins to show both sides and the bidding appears to go off ok with many active bidders during a live setting. The seller appears to not having any scheduled up but here's a link of a past sale. It’s not just eBay that is slow, or so it seems in my recent experience. I see a lot of nice coins languishing on websites of higher end dealers. I recently picked up a really, really nice stickered classic head cent that I watched for several weeks, eventually offered an amount well below the ask, and it was immediately accepted.

I used to search eBay several times a day for the various categories I seriously collected, mostly historical Americana items. Now I may spend 10- 15 minutes a day checking eBay, primarily because they've eliminated the search categories that used to be at the top of an item I’m checking.

This makes searching eBay infinitely more difficult. Life is too short to do this.

  • With little or no insertion fees, there's no pain for the seller to just let them sit. And i think that makes it more difficult for the buyer to score a bargain.

  • SametsSamets Posts: 194 ✭✭✭

I've had pretty good luck sending my best offer to sellers and getting the coin at my offer or near it. I would imagine with summer time slow downs, sellers are more willing to get something.
