1799/8 Bust Dollar Newp...

MeltdownMeltdown Posts: 8,957 ✭✭✭✭✭

These are quick cell phone shots but I wanted to get your thoughts on this one...
It's raw obviously.
It's clearly a 9 over 8 with 13 stars but that's all I really know.
I think it's original skin and would grade F15... Is there any chance of VF?
I will be sending it to PCGS very soon.

I think the coin makes VF and it looks more original than a high percentage of examples that I’ve examined.

I also think it makes VF but am concerned it will be considered to have been burnished to bring out the high points.

VF i believe, and a fairly original example.

    Strong coin.
    Original and a 20.
15 on a really bad day.

It faces up pretty well and it will probably grade, but It doesn't give me the honest originality impression. It sort of looks like it might have been a cleany white coin that got a bit of a "makeover". Perhaps some soot or ash applied to the surfaces, and burnished on the high points to give it the circ cam look. The high points, splotchy distribution of the "black", and the texture of the surfaces just give me the impression that it got a little bit of a makeover, but overall it presents fairly well and would be a great value coin for a vast number of collectors. I wouldn't be offended to see it in a 20 holder, but I wouldn't put my money on it beaning.

I've never owned one of this series, but I would feel it to be vf20 and original surfaces. This is a 200+ year old coin and I'm in love. Very nice pickup.

It will definitely get a 20, might even have a shot at 25. Nice coin!

It will probably slab but I would doubt that it would CAC.

I'm not an expert but I disagree. I think it probably has a 50/50 chance of CAC'ing. I like the originality of the coin.

Thanks all for the insight. PCGS will get the first shot at grading it next week. It's a keeper if all goes well. I've got my other example listed for sale currently.

Ooh the 15 star reverse, my favorite. If I got back into collecting this would on my bingo card as the kids say.
