I think this one is undergraded. Not sure if that counts as underrated.

    MS63?

    Hi Crypto
It’s graded 62. Seems much better than that to my eyes.

    I have a few, but I would say this one’s @ #1:

IHC collectors know this is the toughest, rarest & most impressive overdate in the entire 51 year series. Outside the series, though, very few know about it.
There are only 3 examples in the PCGS pop that have received a UNC grade. The AU’s are also rare & garner anywhere from $30-$50k in the rare instances they become available.
This one should not be graded UNC-details due to cleaning. Imo, it should be because of environmental damage as the coin appears to have spent some time (brief at least) submerged in water. If that’s so, the “details” are not man made.
Yet, it’s only the 4th UNC example I’m aware about. Even more, it’s very well struck for the date. Bottom line is it’s very rare & very underrated.

That one is a beast for sure Ken. Still trying to acquire a nice example.

My nominee for this title is my 1838 106A Seated Dime. If you check with PCGS. NGC and ANACS you will find none of them have ever certified an 1838 106A. You will find more than a dozen F-106 coins. The archives at Fortin's site has 1 piece for his reference set and has handled 6 other 106A coins ever. Heritage has handled 2 coins. There may be a certain number of coins that simply have not been identified thus far but I have examined over 500 1838 coins and cannot find more than 8 different coins. The fact is there are more than 20 1838 varieties and the large number of 106 coins may be obscuring the true population of 106A coins. Just my opinion. James

The 42, 49-50, 58,59,60 are all under rated

My new MSD, "I haven't received it yet but I did pay for it". I cant understand why it was priced out for what it was but since I bought gold this month I was going to not buy anything more until Aug but this coin I just couldn't stop thinking about. The 1885 CC MSD was the lowest CC mintage ever right ? And one of THE lowest MSD years period.

So I paid the freight. Not cheap, but a bargain. Who knows how many 1885 MS65's are even out there anyways ? Some ? But not a lot. This coin should have sold for $200 to $300 more then it did even if it was from a hoard. I'll be eating a lot of Mac and Cheese for a month because of it.

Anyways, my new favorite MSD. My 5'th "CC".

    Congratulations!

Per PCGS pop report, there are about 5000 grading events. I didn't look up the NGC numbers.

Yes its a hoard coin. I wouldn't call it "rare" because of it but it is a chance for a working guy on a pension to own a real beauty which is why Nixon released them in the first place.

I'll never be able to afford a $30,000 to $300,000 MSD. Coins so hard to find their availability are numbered in single digits. Mintage's/Grades/VAMs so numismatically original they are almost above pricing. Or other exotic and beautiful examples of our rich coinage history. I'm just not rich to do that.

But $1,300 for a MSD MS65 "CC" from 1885, the lowest mintage year for "CC"s, I can handle despite the fact a major hoard of them were released 60 years ago. They still hold value and are utterly beautiful and this should only increase as the years go by and people do stupid things like clean them, crack the cases, inherit and melt them....ect

@Silverstacker: Beautiful piece! Congratulations on your purchase.
Just a little informational about this date. Even though the mintage is low, they are available as so many never saw circulation. While I wouldn’t exactly call it common, it’s certainly not a rarity. It is tougher in the grade you purchased, but even in MS66, they are obtainable.

Indeed, that display is beautiful! I think your visible association of coins/currency to our history is an example of what helps make this such a fascinating hobby. It’s become far too focused on grades, profit and loss.
    Kudos to you, sir.
